Formal invites didn't specify and guest?

We sent out invitations that listed just the single person and did not include and guest. The RSVP says M__________ for filling out for the guest. We didn't specify and guest, how do we make sure our guests know they are welcome to bring a guest. Invitations have been sent. Should we send a note sayings two seats have been saved in their honor?

Based on the way you addressed the invitations, you made it clear the invitation was for ONLY the person whose name was on the envelope.  If you now want to allow those guests to bring a +1, you would need to call them all.  I would also do that sooner than later as the ability to bring a +1 may impact the way they respond to the invitation.

I agree with @MobKaz. However, depending on how far out you are from the wedding you could send a note. If you just now sent out the invitations and realized your mistake, a note that would arrive a day or so after the invitation would work. If more than a few days has passed, I agree you need to call the guests.
