Bummer about possibly having to postpone my honeymoon because of the coronavirus

So I WAS going on a 10 day cruise out of Barcelona with my husband to be, but given most of the spots were going to are in Italy and France, we may have to cancel but were waiting to see how it is by May (wedding in August but get refund in May). Its really bumming me out because it looks like we probably will have to delay it and since it's so new, I cant think of any mini ideas. We like nature and will be getting married in Rhode island (dont live there). Does anyone have any ideas on a mini moon? What are some tips about deciding to go or not?

I’d find out what is the last day you can get a refund and wait until then to decide. Things could be worse by then, or there could be a vaccine or treatment in trials or safe for the public by then. Things change fast with a new virus/an epidemic so wait until you have the most information you can before making a decision.

  • What's the absolute latest date that you can still get a refund for the cruise? I would try to wait until as late as possible to decide about canceling. It's too early to know for sure what will happen with this virus, but sometimes these things subside faster than expected.

If you do end up deciding/needing to cancel your cruise, I would recommend the Berkshires for a mini-moon. I went there on my honeymoon several years ago since my husband and I were looking for something kind of low key and not too far from home, and it was really a wonderful week. Great for anyone who loves nature, especially hiking. August is a popular time there (lots of music and theater events going on in the summer), but you'd probably still be able to book something if you started looking as soon as you canceled the cruise.

  • I think a perfect mini-moon would be Block Island- right off the coast of RI.  Such a quaint island feel.  Lots of beaches (obviously), hiking, biking, restaurants, shops, etc.  Just a relaxed, happy vibe there all around.  I think it would be perfect for a mini-moon!
  • Such a coincidence!  I am going on a super similar cruise...except mine is 7 days...also in May.  I'm kinda stressing about it also.  The cruise itself I actually won, but have already spent a ton of money on other things...most of which aren't through the cruise line...plus I don't want to lose the value of the cruise either because this is a trip of a lifetime for me.

I also need to figure what I can do to protect myself financially, jic things go really south.

TBH though, and I hope I'm not jinxing myself, the main thing I'm worried about is cities being "ghost towns" and lots of places I would have wanted to go being closed.  But if the cruise isn't cancelled and unless things look REALLY dicey, I'm going.  The chances of catching are super low (see my quote from WHO below).  Plus, even worse-case scenario, for most people who contract this illness, it's a mild illness.  The serious complications are usually with elderly people and/or those with certain pre-existing medical problems.

Now, obviously, it would be AWFUL to end up in a quarantine situation...whether I got sick or not.  But I don't see that being very likely in the Western Mediterranean either.

From WHO:  More than 95% of all COVID-19 cases are occurring in China, with the majority of those in Hubei Province. For people in most other parts of the world, your risk of getting COVID-19 is currently low, however, it’s important to be aware of the situation and preparedness efforts in your area.

  • I probably would cancel the cruise. Lots of options for a mini-moon though! Block Island, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Montauk, Lake George, Saratoga. Lots of options in Vermont too.

This.   I am still planning my own vacation for April in the states but would want more information before pulling a non-refundable trigger for August.

You have TONS of great parts to see in NE.    In addition to what @climbingwife said there's Newport, the Cape, Maine coast line, CT shore and Mystic, and in LI in addition to Montauk there are the vineyards.
