Wedding Woes

TGIF

We made it!  Tomorrow is my nephew's 1st birthday party...just my parents and siblings (my sis had her in-laws last weekend), in their backyard.  I'm looking forward to it.  Errands/down-time round out the weekend.  Anyone else have fun plans?

Re: TGIF

  • Finally Friday!

    Tomorrow we're going to Lowe's. I have questions for in-store person about doing our back splash. {plus I wanna get a better mat for our front door}

Actually ... maybe someone here can help? So I've been told rustoleum tub & tile is best {low scent, easy use} but there's a spray vs etching cream.
Nothing wrong with tiles, just colouring so I was going to put over it.

Anyone does this before? What did you use?
Low scent and easy use is important because at this rate, BK will be home and I don't need a strong epoxy smell.

Good news and no news from contractor yesterday.

Good news - leak likely from dishwasher hose directly. We're told to check hose, tighten and if it continues then we replace it.
Hole in wall is normal, not a mouse.
Mark on ceiling is confirmed steam and just use spackling when repainting it.

No news - dryer not done but M may be able to do it.

Few more things scratched off list :) I think I'm going to redo our list as it's actually looking a bit wonky from scratched off items and added items.

M & I need to get the main level cleaned up too, so we'll probably do that over BK's nap

Sunday I think is gonna be a chill day. I ordered a delivery of donuts for us to have after BK's nap. I may suggest having her try playing with some playdoh - she's not constant but I wanna see if she's into it a bit, I picked up a few colours on a good deal and was going to put a couple in her stocking.
  • @ei34, my kitten Maple Bar's birthday is today, lol.  She is also 1-year-old.  I'll post before/after pictures for you all on Monday.  From when we first got her, 3-months old, to present.  I assume she is fully grown now, but she doesn't look like it.  She's turned out to be a small cat and still looks like a kitten.

@kvruns, a dinosaur pumpkin sounds awesome!

@VarunaTT, you're going to outlast them all, haha!  I can imagine K is antsy to perform again.  I'm glad they will have the opportunity at a place taking the proper precautions.

My H and I are going to do early voting for the first time tomorrow!  I'm worried if I try to do it on election day, it will be too busy at my polling place.  One of my coworkers is doing it today and gave me the low down on what to do.  It's easier than I thought it would be, so I'm pretty jazzed.

One of the state amendments to vote in is if we should allow parishes (counties) to put sports betting to a vote and be allowed, if that is what voters want.  Right now, sports betting is illegal per state law.  Though we do have a LOT of casinos.

I mention this because this is the only amendment that has commercials airing.  Probably thanks to the powerful and wealthy gaming lobby, thanks to Caesars and the other casino oligopolies, lol.  The commercial cracks me up every time I see it.  The gist is we want to keep those gaming revenues in Louisiana, instead of people here traveling to Mississippi (it's been legal there almost since the first moment they could).  And that this will help support schools, blah, blah.

(These are my words)...so make sports betting legal!  For the children.  Oh okay, casinos.  I'll vote to expand gambling in Louisiana because that's what's best for the kids, lmao.  I actually am going to vote "yes", but that does mean I can't laugh at how far they are reaching there.

  • Because I went home sick on Tuesday I picked up a shift tomorrow, so I have a one day weekend.  I'll probably take it easy and do stuff around the house.  Maybe I'll go to the grocery store.  And if it's nice tomorrow afternoon after work I might do a hike with the puppy.

  • My definition of fun has changed lately, but I'm looking forward to the weekend. Tonight we're having dinner with my parents. Tomorrow the real fun begins. We're going to trim back all of the bushes and pressure wash the walkways around the house. One of my friends had to cancel on book club yesterday, so I'm going to go by her house and drop off a bottle of wine tomorrow afternoon. Another friend implied that something not good is going on. I'm not sure if she'll want to share or not, but I hope to at least let her know I'm thinking about her. It's supposed to get kind of cold this weekend, so I'm hoping to do a fire. Maybe a hike or something Sunday, or I might bake something.

A year ago I would have thought that was an incredibly boring weekend.

    TGIF!

It's been a bit of a frustrating week.    We have been engaged with multiple clients due to the overall nature of the impact Covid has had on businesses.   If you're a manufacturer in the supply chain lead times have increased dramatically and they aren't going down anytime soon.   I am so sympathetic to customers however I'm losing my tolerance for being the attacked as the messenger.   Lead times are high, demand is high, and cases are spiking and when we have one person out it isn't just ONE day but up to 14 or more.     I'm truly grateful to be working and to have this position and yet I'm also beyond frustrated that the concept at the moment is to yell about supply rather than look at things from a global perspective.

Second mammogram is today.  Hopefully I get the all clear!

The weekend brings flu shots for kiddos, a soccer game and hopefully I get to dive face first into the Kringle that's due to deliver today.
I'm in Procurement for the engineering company I work for.  Hi!  I'm the one that sends out e-mails like that looking for the status of our POs, lol.  But I'm not a jerk about it.  Since the pandemic, we have had quite a few POs that are delayed because of COVID, from the various manufacturers/companies that we order from.  I get it.  Most of the time, that's fine.  I just need to know so I can update the status in the reports I send out.  If it is something more urgent, I'll request they expedite it as best they can.  But it is what it is.

Do other people in your household know that Kringle is coming?  Not that you would eat a whole Kringle in one sitting.  But I'm just saying, in general of course, the outside trash is useful for hiding evidence, lol.

Yes!  Thank you for the reminder about flu shots.  I want my H and I to get ours this weekend.  Maybe on the way or after voting.  He hates voting (though he's registered) and he hates getting a flu shot, so it might be best to just get them over with at the same time.  He usually does neither, but I've talked him into both this year because of the high stakes.

My H doesn't drive and I joked with him I wouldn't take him to the polls if he was going to vote for Trump.  He's not.  He hates Trump as much as I do.  And I am just joking, I wouldn't make it more difficult for him to vote, even if we were on opposite sides.  I'm just glad it's hypothetical though, lol.

DH knows it's coming and so far my kids aren't interested!  I'm possibly going to have to freeze portions for later if MIL and FIL don't come over!  Our town is in the red so they're the only people we'd be OK with in our bubble.

And yeah, we've had serious delays sometimes measured in several weeks AND long lead times.  It isn't ideal.   But a pandemic isn't ideal and to complain about things being not normal makes me think you're not dealing in reality.
  • @MissKittyDanger we used Rustoleum to do our lineoleum countertops and whiled it turned out really great the scent was still pretty strong (we did use the low scent type). So I would still try to find a day when you can have windows/ doors open and fans running.

    Damn. :( Ideally we'd like to have BK out of the house, but at this rate BK may have to be home because I'm running out of time to have our patio open {weather wise}

My H and I have done a lot of backsplashes with the renos we do.  But I've never used rustoleum for anything, so I can't really comment specifically on that product.  Not because I've heard or know of any bad reasons to use rustoleum, we just haven't.

What we have done with backsplashes that is so cheap and easy to do, is use vinyl tile squares.  They're thin and are often peel and stick.  For the rental unit of my personal duplex, we used one that looked like copper.  It's even shiny like real metal.  For our renovated duplexes, we used a marble-look vinyl.   I've attached some examples of what they look like.  I know that is not what you all are currently planning, but wanted to at least let you know about different options.

  • I missed the actual Thursday thread yesterday!  LOL!  It was a busy day!  Its a dreary Friday today, but tomorrow the weather should be nicer!  We also leave for vacation tomorrow!

We are going up to the Berkshires in MA and its going to be so lovely!  Saturday is our drive up and then on Sunday, is a train ride on an olde timey train.  DD should get a big kick out of it!  Hopefully the leaves are at peak leaf peeping!  We have some other small things planned, but it will generally be just hanging out in a different location than home.

  • Thanks @short+sassy! I want to do my own backsplash tiles to save on money too. M said he could actually  do my floor tile too - but I don’t want to piss my contractor off either. I was quoted for the tile floor, cabinets and laminate countertops so I’m not sure he’ll want the job if I take the tiles off the “to do” list.

  • Babe had his second flu shot today and was a champ.  Squealed for about 5 seconds, and then was over it!  We're spending the night at the IL's tonight and leaving the babe with them all day tomorrow.  It will be so nice to get out of the house a little and have all day tomorrow to clean the house and hopefully finish the bedroom furniture that's still sitting in the garage!

@MissKittyDanger I agree with @charlotte989875 about they smell with rustoleum.  We are using the floor paint kit to paint the tile in our bathroom and i would say the odor is "medium".  Not so strong that I wouldn't continue while the baby is in the house, but noticeable and definitely need windows open. @short+sassy has great suggestions with the vinyl tiles too!  My ILs used those on a bathroom floor and it looks really great.
  • @short+sassy Ideal world I would love to redo and do peel + stick {some backsplash does not cover whole area} but it's a texture on some that would be my issue.
Have you done peel + stick on texture back splash?
    I love the marble one
  • I have today off from work (yesterday was the last day of the extended tax season) so I've decided to vote early and, at long last, get a haircut (my last one predates the pandemic). I'm nervous about both but wearing a mask and washing my hands.
  • Thanks for sharing those @short+sassy!  I have been flirting with doing those as well, but it probably won't be in the near future.  I love the copper one!  I'm going to redo my kitchen in the next two to three years anyways, and it would be easier to do the backsplash then, so my plan is just to live with the laminate backsplash that it is currently my situation. I do hate it though, so much.  Maybe I can get the cheap dollar store backsplash stickers and have them tide me over for a few years ....

Even cheaper than a laminate countertop and more sturdy, is what we did in that same pic with the marble-look.  For the counter part of it, my H put down the counter base from plywood.  Then attached the same vinyl tiles from the backsplash.  For the counter, you need a little more "damage control", so he then put an epoxy layer on top.

The most expensive thing was $75 for a gallon of epoxy.  We were shocked at the price the first time we bought epoxy, lol.  It's not a huge counter top, though it wraps around that you can't see in the picture.  But the whole kit and caboodle for materials was less than $150, including the backsplash.  My H is an experienced handyman, but this is still a fairly easy DIY.  The hardest part is getting the epoxy down in a smooth coat without bubbles, but it can be reheated to try again.  He learned how to do it on You Tube.

The copper one I bought on Amazon.  I think it was something like 6 squares for $21.  I needed 54 squares, so the total was around $180.  I found out after the fact that Home Depot has something similar.  The ones I bought were not peel and stick.  They were thick and we ended up buying an industrial weight paper cutter to cut them, lol.  There are tools that will do it also, but that was a cheaper and easier option that worked just as well for our purposes.

  • Hi all.
DS's party is tomorrow. I made the cupcakes (will decorate them tomorrow), and cleaned up some today. DS thought they were muffins and kept asking for a Muff. It was too cute, but also no, lol. Tomorrow will just be last minute shopping and decorating. An Australian friend is bringing this amazing Spinach, cheese, bacon dip. Apparently, and y'all please tell me if you have heard this before because I am not a foodie person, they call it a cob dip because it is made in a cob loaf. I had to get her to really explain it to me because I had never heard of a cob loaf before. I felt so dumb, lol, but Australians only use half words anyway so it's fine.
  • @missJeanLouise, I just googled because I'd never heard of that either. I've seen restaurants put soup or spinach dip in bread bowls like that, but "cob loaf" is a new one for me.

    And now I want panera.

I'm glad I mentioned it!  Now I feel inspirational, lol.

In answer to your other post, the copper one was put over an existing tile backsplash*.  For the reno'ed duplexes with the marble-look, they didn't previously have a backsplash, so it was just over an already smooth wall.

I'll ask my H for tips to pass along when I get home.

*Oh yes, because that kitchen was seriously "retro chic" when I bought it, lmao.  That's code for hadn't been updated since probably the '50s or '60s.  The original cabinets were actually pretty great or at least had once been.  They were solid wood, but unfortunately were just so old that they were fairly deteriorated.  And a light tan/dark tan tiled backsplash to match the tiles on the walls.  Not the whole wall, but still.  The walls!!!  So very, very retro, lol.  We've never taken the tiles off the walls because would involve practically gutting the bottom half of the kitchen.  Plus, I don't think it looks that bad.  I think it's so dated that it's cute again, lol.

Here's a pic of the tiles I'm talking about that had been the previous backsplash.

Oh!  I also found a more close up picture of that coppery backsplash.  The sheets I bought were actually four of those squares in one.  But we found it easier to work with if we separated all those squares and put a thin grout line between them.

Fyi this is what I ordered:

    https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B086TSNWQK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Tbh I considered it but figured because it's a back splash and textured I couldn't?
I ended up youtubed it {from another company who sold the more expensive version} so it helped a lot to show me it's best idea.

I didn't WANT to do the epoxy based paint, but it felt like my only option because of above reasons. But covid does not help
