It's Friday, Friday

Title should sung like the silly Rebecca Black song from ~10 years ago....

Yesterday was a much better day for everyone here.  Baby and I took a short walk to school to pickup his new paperwork.  We also had a contractor come out to look at our bathrooms - primary bath is very dated and tile work is terrible with lots of leaks, guest bath has terrible tile work and a very old jetted tub that we really dislike, and we need new toilets and vanity in the half bath.  Really liked the guy, but unlikely the work will be able to be done before baby comes (not 100% necessity but would be nice to be able to use the shower in our bedroom.  Another person should be here anytime to check them out too.  Hopefully estimates aren't too ridiculous.

Honest question:  why do people prefer tile in a shower/tub as opposed to an insert?  I personally think inserts are WAY easier to clean/keep clean. We have had nothing but trouble with tile showers in the last few places we've lived, but obviously it looks pretty.  If you all were buying a house would no tile in the shower make a big difference?  We're really torn.

  • Grout grout, get those stains out!  Those are the things that make banana pout come on!  I'm talking to you come on!

I much prefer tile, but I have an aversion to inserts that’s a little weird. (I also hate tub/shower combos). It’s not a deal breaker in a house but it’s something I would want to renovate.
  • @Casadena We did an insert for our bathtub and game changer! BK was 7m when we did it
    This is what we did

We still have a fair amount to do in our bathroom but this literally gave us solid time that we feel we can DIY rest

I don't know any advantages, other than it looks good.  IMHO, inserts look fine and would completely be a non-issue if I were buying either a rental or a personal home.  But tile does look a lot better.  We have a tiled shower in our own home that is probably 30 years old and have never had issues with it.  Though we did replace the tiled shower with an insert in the other half of our personal duplex.  I cannot for the life of me remember why we did that, though.  I'll speak to my H about the durability of tiled showers and get back to you on Monday.

For the two duplexes we renovated last year, there were 8 bathrooms total.  I think all of them had tiled showers that were at least 20 years old.  We did replace the tile for 2-3 of them because it was in bad shape.  I think we replaced them with inserts.  But did not need to do that for most of them.

    Finally Friday!

I have a bunch of errands to run after work and then the cabinet guy comes tomorrow.  Woot! One thing will be fixed and out of the way. Other than that, I’m tired AF and ready for Friday to be over.

I have a tiled tub only becuase when I did my reno the guy said it would look better, so I just went with it.  I found both to be hard to clean. But my liner has made from a material that just gripped dirt.

  • I am closing on my cash-out refinance today.  I has been a LONG time coming!  Over 5 years.  Then I'm going to the bank and putting that entire check as a payment against my HELOC balance to finally pay myself back.

My "all in" cost for that property (purchase price plus renovations) is within $500 of the check I'm getting today.  This is 100% completely and totally coincidental and is actually kind of freaking me out, lol.  There are WAY too many factors, dozens of variables, involved for it to be that close.  Yet it is (shiver).  Not sure if that is a good shiver or a bad shiver, lol.

  • Casadena - Nothing wrong with the inserts, we put them in both bathrooms we redid because we had budget constraints.  Tile looks higher end and you can really put your own design ideas into tile with color and patterns.  But that comes with a great cost in materials (potentially) and installation.

We will be back in the attic running the wiring to the installed boxes this weekend.  We are also supposed to have the can lights arrive today.  So not sure if we will start them or start to install the fans themselves.  H is the general contractor on this job, I just follow his lead on what he wants to do.

We have DDs mini session on Sunday for her 4th birthday pics.  I got her an adorable faux fur coat and long tulle dress, that should look really great with the outdoor setting for the pictures.  I also have a plan for a quick outfit change, since we only have 15 minutes.  I told H I want to practice the quick change, so that we don't waste our 15 mins!
  • @Casadena I wanna say I heard a This American Life about Rebecca Black before and after the release of that song. It was very insightful.

I think inserts just don't last as long as tile but I know nothing.

One of my coffee friends moved into my neighborhood so DS and I have seen her in the last week than we had in the last 6months.
  • Tile looks higher end so it also depends on your area/neighborhood what you want to use. We have tile in our master bath and have trouble twice with the pan leaking. We have inserts in the other baths and haven't had any problems with them. Tile does give you more options decor wise.

I'm really in a funk. Don't know why but just can't seem to pull myself out of it. I have to make myself workout every day because I know that helps but that only helps a bit. I haven't been able to drop the weight I want to drop, but all I want to do is eat! So I know what the problem there is! I just really want life to get back to normal so that I can see friends and have a social life of some sort. No plans for the weekend other than cleaning around the house. Sorry to be such a Debbie Downer.
  • So glad it is Friday! This week has been a struggle at work, and I'm not even sure why, but ready for the break. We're going to a friend's backyard for a socially distant fire tonight. I'm hoping for a hike tomorrow. Otherwise, the weekend will just be chores and chilling.

I also prefer tile to inserts, but I think it's just personal preference. Or it may be unfair bias because the apartments of my 20's had super cheap crappy inserts. I'd probably like a more modern nicer one a lot more.

She totally didn't deserve any of the hate she got for that song - she was like 13 when it was released and i remember her saying that she chose it because it wasn't at all sexual like a lot of the others her label wanted her to choose.  The song was silly and catchy and H and I sing it all the time, lol!
  • I just think tile is prettier @Casadena
@OliveOilsMom DDs outfit sounds so cute! I know all about scrambling through a wardrobe change mid-mini-session, good luck!

If you’re peaking in @mrsconn23 I hope you’re having small special birthday moments in spite of everything

Really glad it’s Friday I need breather.
  • Maybe UO but I don’t like inserts and I think they tend to look cheap. My view point might be skewed because my dad was a contractor/artisan carpenter so I grew up spoiled with home reno and I got to see all of his beautiful projects at client’s homes. I do hate hate cleaning grout though.

I’m glad it’s Friday. It has been a week. It’s going to rain here all next week. I’m not looking forward to the day I have to screen outside and it’s a high of 45 and a low of 28 degrees. That’s basically Antarctica as far as my usual Southern Californian sensibilities lie.

We’re supposed to have game night tonight with FSIL A and her FI. I was able to clean the house last night and that does feel like a relief. We were supposed to go on a walk when we get home, but it’s probably going to be raining. I might try to squeeze in a walk at lunch and just eat my food during my short break instead.

  • I don’t like the look of inserts but I think it depends on the market for your home- if everyone else in the neighborhood is tile I’d do tile versus if the rest of the quality of the house is similar to inserts then go for it. Sort of like hard wood/wood look tile. Both can work well and look great but I’m not buying a million dollar house with wood look tile, and hard wood isn’t a necessary investment in all properties.
  • To add I'm with the others that I think tile looks better.  After cleaning tile, I understand why people opt for the insert.
