How to cover ceremony when band is playing reception only

I was wondering how y'all may have handled pre-wedding, ceremony, and cocktail hour music when a band is playing the reception only. We can't afford to hire a DJ to go along with the band, and I have a very specific list of music in mind for pre-reception activities, but I'm worried about things like timing and flow if we don't have a pro at the helm to handle transitions and volume changes. Any thoughts on this?

  • If you are set on specific things, perhaps you should reevaluate and hire a DJ for the entire event instead of a band for the reception. Bands are (usually) much more expensive than DJs. You could probably hire a DJ for the entire event for what a band would cost for the reception.
  • Update: I talked to my band about this and it turns out they actually include this service! Huge stress relief, and just goes to show how helpful good communication with vendors can be!

The band was really important to us, as we are getting married in a concert venue and having a rock-themed wedding. :)
  • Consider hiring a wedding violin for your ceremony.  They are a lot more affordable than a DJ or a band (some prices start at $75!).  Do a search for wedding violin on facebook or google to get a list of people doing it.  Another suggestion is to have a friend play guitar or sing.
