Dear Prudence,

I live in an apartment with cluster mailboxes and have been receiving my neighbors junk mail. If it is just junk mail, do I have to give it back to them or can I just throw it out? I figure they’d probably toss it themselves but I feel weird doing it. At the same time, I don’t know them, and since the mailboxes have keys, I would have to go knock on their door at a time they were home to give it back. This is graduate student housing so we all have weird schedules which makes that more complicated. If it was important mail, of course I’d make the effort, but do I have to for junk mail? USPS might deliver through rain or snow or whatever, but I didn’t sign up for this!

Just lean it on their door.  IDK why, but my danged insurance company, which absolutely has the right address online, somehow sends it to the next door (my old apartment) apartment every time.  It's annoying, but they just lean it on my door.

Jus tout it outside their door. No need to talk to anyone. Annoying? Sure but it’s clearly bugging you enough to write Prudie so you don’t just want to throw it away.

I’m for the door thing.  Or if your as lazy as me, just drop it on the floor.  They’ll find it.

I'd put a note to the mail carrier pointing out that Jane is in #201, but her mail keeps getting delivered to #302, and then just leave misdelivered mail on top of the box or somewhere obvious.

Either put it at their door or put it on top of the mailbox bank?  I guess it depends on how tall it is.  Or tape it to the right mailbox?  

But yes, writing to Prudie about the failures of your postal worker is at the top of the list of how to solve this.
