Wedding Cake Charms

My parents 30th anniversary came up this past Monday, July 18th and I was going through their wedding photos with my mom. I noticed a pic with all her bridesmaids and a few guests standing around the cake holding ribbons, preparing to pull the charms from them. I knew this was an old tradition but didn't realize my mom had done it. I would want to do this as well. What are your thoughts? Would it be neat to continue what my mom did or is this tradition old fashioned? Also what is the process of this tradition?

I think that would be awesome to carry on with the tradition! Do you mind sharing a picture? I've never seen that before.

My sister did that at her wedding, its a southern tradition .

I think for my sisters the charms we had were for next one getting married, baby, luck, finding love, and one other maybe for travel - there are all kinds of different ones, I remember I pulled a horseshoe for luck I think

I couldn't get my mom's pic to upload (I wish I could, I love it!) but here is one from google: http://bios.weddingbee.com/pics/65316/cake_pulls.jpg

The thing is the charms are inserted under the bottem layer after the cake is baked, with ribbons attatched, then the baker ices the rest of the cake and before the bride and groom cut the cake, the bridesmaids and other attendants pull the charms out and see their "furtune". It's actually a Victorian tradition.

I found a site that you can pick and choose charms from called weddingcakecharms.com and they even have different ribbons you can order. It's sopposedly a southern tradition but I have only seen it in Louisiana where they got married.

I'm actually reading a book called 'There 's Cake in my Future' and they had a bridal shower cake with charms inside, example: the baby carriage would mean the person who pulls it out will get preg soon. I had never heard of it but it sounds like neat idea !
