Wedding Woes

Wednesday

I don't order delivery very often because it's usually been a bad experience.  Plus I can't stomach the high delivery fees.

But I just read surprising news that might change my mind.  Apparently Amazon has entered an agreement with GrubHub.  Prime members can now get a free GrubHub premium Plus service, which includes free deliveries on orders over $12.

Here is info about it, though I haven't checked this news out directly on Amazon yet:

Amazon Prime members now get free Grubhub deliveries after retail giant strikes deal with Just Eat for the struggling service (msn.com)

I'm always excited to get something else free with a service I already have or something else I am already buying.

Other than that, not much going on with me.

  • Oh that would be awesome.  However watch those prices.  Delivery fee’s are usually low.  They get you in “service fees” which is the app usage fee.  I noticed my delivery (in my area) may be $2.99 or $3.99 or something but it’s always doubled or more in the next line down with the service fee charge.  Not including the tax on there.  I’m still too cheap to do delivery.  I always tell myself if I want it bad enough I have to pick it up.  If not, there’s usually an ice cream bar or energy bar in my house that will suffice.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked myself out of doing a pick up because I didn’t want to get dressed.

Other than that SSDD.  So glad yesterday was a wfh day.  I even managed to squeeze in a hot tub right before the storm.  We’re going to get storms the next few days, and the jets feel so good on my muscles it’s therapeutic and needed so hopefully I have the same luck tonight.  Plus I get to listen to the comedy channel on my pandora.  If anyone passes by my house (my deck is on the side of my house) they’d probably be confused, hearing me laugh out loud. By myself. Weirdo.

  • If my period doesn't start soon, I'm going to end up eating myself out of my home.  This is ridiculous.

I'm incredibly sleepy.  Insomnia hit, hard, and I know I saw 3:30 this morning before finally falling into a light doze, not really asleep.  Ugh.  Can this week be over already.

Aaahhh!  That's right.  I forgot it's not just one fee.  It's two.  Why?  Why can't they just charge one fee even if the total is the same?  It makes me feel nickled and dimed.  Plus the tip.

That's why I almost never order delivery, lol.  I bail at checkout when my $30 order somehow ballooned to $45.  No one delivers to me that is more than a few miles away, anyway.  I'll go pick it up myself and save that money, as well as make sure my order is right before I leave.

I've ordered delivery (not including pizza), 4x in my life.  One of those orders was stolen by the delivery driver.  I watched him on the tracker pick my order up.  Drive it to the suburbs.  Where his car never moved again.

Two of those orders were missing items.  One of them was missing about half the food.  The other one was only missing a side item, but still, I paid for it.

So only 1 out of 4 orders was correct.  I am not meant for food deliveries, lol.

This week is so weird.  My position officially started on Saturday, but it's not been announced yet.  I signed my offer letter yesterday.  My manager is out on vacation.  My former boss/now co-supe is back in the office, but he's not sure how/if he can start passing work over to me.  We also want to know when we can at least tell my team (we will schedule a zoom).  And I'm trying not to get involved in anything at my current level because I need the deck cleared to get going next week when I have to report to the office M-W.  So...I'm doing busy work and just waiting around.  I'm hoping he talks to our director at some point today to get clarification and then he can get me started on something.

SSDD otherwise.  DH had a good first day at the new job.  Yay.
Is that a regular working out of the office M-W?  Or just for next week?

If it's a regular thing, how are you feeling about that?  I know you've been WFH for years.

Permanent hybrid. M-W in the office, Th-F, weekends, holidays on call at home (Saturday is a full workday and Sunday is actually only on call as well).  I'm feeling all right about it.  My start time will be an hour later, so I won't have to adjust my wake-up time by too much.  It will be a big change, but getting out of the house a few days a week will nice.  It's best of both worlds.
  • Speaking of WFH, I overheard a secret at my own workplace yesterday.

One of the people in Doc Control gave an ultimatum.  Either they allow her to WFH or she is putting in her two-week notice.  They actually caved and are allowing her to WFH!  I was really surprised by that.

It is soooooo TEMPT-ING to pull the same thing.  I just had a rare short meeting with my boss yesterday.  Apparently steel work is about to ramp up.  I'm the only one in the office who prepares the steel packages.  There are two others who can kind of do it, in a pinch.  But they are also busy in their own jobs.  I will be extra needed when things start getting hot.  He didn't say this, but I got the impression they might hire another person to assist me when that happens.

On the one hand, in the near future is a prime time to take advantage of the situation.  Either with WFH (or hybrid) and/or a raise.  But I've always been so uncomfortable with advocating for myself in the workplace.  I know it's a weakness, but there it is.  I'd have no qualms about giving an ultimatum...but only if it was a real one.  And, at least right now, it's not.  I wouldn't leave my job unless I already had a WFH opportunity and/or higher pay, at another company.

  • I also never order delivery, I always pick up.  I know my sister does it, and it seems to work for her.  I also sort of prefer eating at a restaurant to take-out the vast majority of the time, but Covid really changed that.  We have never ordered to this house, and we've been here for 7 years.  We did have food delivered here once though - it was for two houses down.  It was odd.  We walked it over.

  • The travel exhaustion/ jet lag has set in and I’m exhausted. Like was seriously worried I’d fall asleep on the drive in today. I spent an hour and a half chatting with my boss, which was good. He’d been out a while then I was. We have details to work out on my role being finalized so it was good to touch base.

Other than that I’m just ready to nap.
  • I order delivery at least once a week. Everywhere around me delivers and I often don’t feel like walking to go pick up. But it is very expensive. Restaurants also often increase their charges for delivery customers because the fees services charge them are so high.
  • Delivery around here is nearly nonexistent so we do pickup.  I miss living in areas where that's an option but it's nice to have the control!
  • @mrsconn23, I like your attitude about having to go back in.  Depending on comradery in the office, it may be nice to talk to some people, yet it’s not a M-F thing.

@short+sassy, our whole office went hybrid for a) gas prices but also b) people wanted to work from home.  Sooo a threat could work?

That's a funny thing about my office.

My workplace is in New Orleans, the city-proper.  I also live directly in the city and am only about 7 miles away from work.  But very few of my coworkers do.  I'd roughly guess 80-90% of my coworkers live out in the suburbs.  And some of them live WAY far out in the suburbs.  Like 60+ miles away and are probably spending a small fortune on gas right now.

The person I was referring to lives about one hour away from the office and the distance is one of the main reasons she wanted to WFH.

I should plan a revolt (rubbing my hand together, sinisterly), lol.
