Wedding Woes

Tuesday

Please laugh at me:

I'm hosting a dinner and movie tonight.  I decided to make one of my favorite comfort foods, a vegetable lasanga.  Ordered all the stuffs to make last night, put in the fridge, and take out to bake this evening.  Only I forgot the noodles.  I've made this lasagna lots over the years, so I have the recipe open, but I don't really need it for much beyond measurement reminders.  I had the first layer underway and thought, "Okay, time to boil the noodles" and couldn't find them.  I laughed for a good bit.  Basically, I had to the no-boil version in my cart, read the reviews and thought better of it, and took out the no-boil.  I really thought I had added the regular noodles into my cart, but I guess I didn't.  So, i'm leaving a wee bit early to go grab them, boil them, layer everything and then cook it.

Not too much going on.  I think tomorrow I'm going to go revisit my youth.  One of the local indie theatres is showing Reality Bites for free and then a discussion afterwards.  It sounds fun and it's something to do that isn't the bar.

Otherwise, SSDD.  Just getting used to new software at work and working on being social outside of work.

Re: Tuesday

  • VERY easily done, @VarunaTT! I love the no boil.  I probably wouldn’t make it if I has to boil them! Lol.  Have fun nonetheless

My punching bag has a hole in the bladder bag and it’s discontinued so I couldn’t find a new one to replace it online. It’s been sitting in my gym for about a year, deflated.  I miss boxing in my workout routine and decided to go for your advise, V, and not get the electronic “boop boop beep beep bloopity bloop” one. I just got a padded boxing pad that velcro’s to the wall.  It arrives today!
Where I would stand to use it is where the deflated bag was.  I knew the stand was metal and in high demand so I literally dragged it outside yesterday.  The base is full of water and I couldn’t find the plug to unplug it, so I dragged it, water and all, to the curb.  If they wanted the stand that bad, they’re taking it all and I’m not losing a nail trying to drain it! They wanted it bad! In about 1/2 hour, the scrap metalers picked it up, heavy base and all. The scrap metal game is strong where I live.

  • @VarunaTT Oh I hate when that happens. I've sadly done that too many times. Honestly I was never a big fan of the no boils.

Mostly SSDD here. It's so nice out already and I just want to be outside. Instead of inside at my desk.

This lasanga isn't super saucy and the reviews for people that didn't like them, seem to be there wasn't enough sauce to make the no-boil noodles soft in the oven.  Also, maybe not experimenting when I'm feeding people is a good idea.

Speaking of nice weather, one GREAT thing about the new job is now that I'm working with my work bestie again, we're already planning float trips!!!!!  I'm SO READY to be on the water.  My last trip was May 2021!!!  That's too long for me to not be in my happy place.  Also, I was with work bestie in that trip and what she remembers is me being way ahead and waiting for her at the take out point and telling her, "I'm dying" with swollen eyeballs and a stuffed nose.  Now, that shouldn't be an issue after all of these shots!!  GET ME ON THE WATER!!!
  • I love the no boil noodles and definitely will not go through the trouble of lasagna if i have to boil the noodles, lol.

Rough day yesterday - feeling really ignored and underutilized at work. I know i'm new to this team, but i've also been at this company years longer than anyone else. We're working on a project right now that is directly related to things i've been doing for the last 6 years and my boss keeps essentially ignoring or disagreeing with me about conclusions, then 10 minutes later praising my coworker for the same thing. I'm angry and PMSy and just trying to keep my head down and work.
  • @CharmedPam, I've had to do something similar with two basketball hoops.  Left behind at two different rental properties, after closing.  For the first one, it seemed like some young boys across the street played with it often.

We had just installed new windows for that house, so we talked to the kids.  We weren't mad about anything and tried to be extra nice and gentle with our words about it, because I know it can be intimidating for some kids to talk to adult strangers.  We told them we couldn't have it on our property anymore and asked if they knew who owned it or if one of them wanted it.

One of the older kids (12 or 13) sneered at me and said they weren't going to move it.  Oh, bratty child.  You are totally misunderstanding the situation.  With the same friendly, "butter won't melt in my mouth" tone, I said, "Oh, of course not!  We wouldn't expect you to move it if it isn't yours.  But we're cutting it in half on Monday and putting it in the garbage can.  So if one of you all would like it, please feel free to take it sometime this weekend."

They immediately started to wheel it across the street to one of their houses.  Thought so.  My H even helped them.  That was 7 years ago and it's still in the neighbor's yard.  Win-win.

The second one was in the backyard of a duplex we bought.  We left it there, in case any tenants' kids wanted it.  After our first tenant moved in, she said neighborhood kids kept trespassing on the property to play with it and it was exasperating her anxiety.  Not a problem.  Put it out on the curb with a sign that said, "Free."  Or I should say.  We had a sign ready to go, but someone asked if we were getting rid of it as my H was wheeling it to the curb, lol.

  • @VarunaTT, we have all been there!  And at least it's easy enough to pick up noodles on the way home.  A float trip sounds awesome!  I forgot you are working with a former coworker, who became a friend.

  • I’m sorry @casadena. That’s really frustrating. I hope things get less frustrating soon and you get the credit for your knowledge and for all of the hard work you’re doing.

Work today and then two days off so we can go to a concert. I really only needed a day and a half off but unfortunately I had to request an entire day which is kind of phooey, but at least I won’t be at work.

Otherwise SSDD. We had a pretty good weekend. Looking forward to 9:30 pm tonight when I get home lol.

  • I should not be allowed to go to Target unsupervised on my lunch break.  It's just trouble.  LOL

My dad texted this morning that he wasn't feeling well and asked for some groceries.  I picked them up and checked on him.  He's fine.  Just a cold.  He was working.  He just needed some pampering.

It's absolutely gorgeous here today.  I'm hoping to sneak out early and have a cocktail hour on the deck in shorts.   SSDD otherwise.
  • @short+sassy saw this article today and thought of you! (Sorry if it’s huge)

  • @VarunaTT, that sounds like so much fun! I wonder if half the discussion will be about the definition of irony.

I still believe Tuesdays are the worst work days. Everyone needs everything right.this.second and no one is in a good mood. On the fun side, I'm multi-tasking during meetings looking for a dress to wear to my cousin's wedding in May. None of my dressy stuff fits at all, but I have no idea how to dress for this. Has anyone done rent the runway lately? I wonder if that's the easy road.

@Casadena I'm sorry, that's really frustrating!  @VarunaTT I love vegetable lasagna and glad you have float trips in your future

It's spring here too, decided to go for a walk at our local botanic garden earlier.  One of the ponds had dried up and the kids couldn't resist walking across it.  Whoops- they sunk knee-deep into this thick mud.  I got nervous that they were in some sort of pain or insurmountable struggle and ran after them.  Not sure if I thought I would be Jesus walking on water, but at ~100lbs heavier than them, I sunk in immediately.  Lost a shoe.  One of the kids lost one and another lost both, but we did all get out.  Thankfully my brother was planning on popping by for a visit and this all went down about a half hour before his arrival, so he was able to pick us up and drive us home (it's a 2min drive and 10min walk so we usually just walk there, but without shoes I didn't want to walk home).  Scrubbed us all but there's still mud in all of our toenails.  Ugh.  I tried to keep the mood light so the kids were giggling it off but I'm mad at myself, that could/should have been avoided.
  • @levioosa, thanks for the info.  I'm even more excited to go now!  The water there is always such a beautiful shade of blue, even before the zooplankton.

  • Today has been absolutely gorgeous which is wonderful because it is my birthday. I went to lunch with friends then spent a few hours on one of their patios having drinks. H bought me flowers and mini cake. The cake is saved for tomorrow because we went to lunch at Cake Bake. I had half of my piece of cake leftover from lunch. I've talked to all three of my kids and got a video from the grandboys this morning. Overall a pretty good day.
  • @ILoveBeachMusic Happy Birthday!

@ei34 That sounds so annoying but definitely an adventure!  Something you will remember for a long time.  Sorry about losing a shoe ...

It was nice here but windy.  I am in the middle of a fight with a family of rats, and today was a quiet day.  Too quiet ... don't know what is going on with them.

  • Happy Birthday @ILoveBeachMusic
peaceful days ahead for your friend @mrsconn23
    that sucks @ei34

Unfortunately, there is a huge rat problem in NOLA.  I guess that is what happens when you are a port city, lol.  Here are some tips and tricks I've learned over the years:
    • Make sure all pet food is in sealable containers.  Vermin love that stuff.  It is their preferred food source.
    • Go thoroughly through your house and attic looking for any holes, including man-made ones like where wiring goes through.  Fill them with steel wool.  That is one of the few things they can't chew through.  You cannot underestimate the tiny sizes that rats or mice can fit into.  Both of those animals have molded bones and modified skeletons meant to do exactly that.  Mice are already really small and can fit themselves through a hole the size of a dime.
    • Traps and/or poisons around the baseboards of the house.  But be careful with that if there are animals in the house.
I recently started using a noise machine in one of my rentals.  It seems like the problem has gotten better, though that also might be because the cold weather has ended.  The devices send out a high-pitched noise that people/dogs/cats cannot hear, but vermin can.  However, hamsters and guinea pigs can hear the sound also, so they can't be used in homes with those kind of pets.  I'm not sure about rabbits.

The devices supposedly keep bugs away also, but I can't confirm or deny that.  Hmmm, I forgot I was planning to buy a set for my house, once I saw it at least worked for the rats.  I don't have a vermin issue at my house, but I am susceptible to mosquitoes.  This is what I bought.  It has 4.5 stars with 3400+ reviews:

Thanks for the tips!  The exterminator mentioned the steel wool thing, so I've got that going on.  And my rabbits are definitely sensitive to noise.  Annoyingly so, but it is also fun that I can talk to them from inside the house and their ears perk up outside.
My issue was that they were eating all my chicken food the second I put it out for the chickens.  So I relocated my chickens and made it so my rabbits only have food inside at night.

  • @kerbohl, hopefully that helps things!  I can see where the chicken feed was a huge attractant.

For the rabbits, it's more about if the noise that device makes is too high pitched for them to hear it or not.  That's why it doesn't bother people/dogs/cats.  The pitch isn't within the range of what we are capable of hearing.  Though it is right at the cusp.

Ah-ha!  I knew I got that info from somewhere on the sales page.  I clicked on it again.  They actually have a handy-dandy bar graph with different animals hearing ranges.  Rabbits have a similar hearing range to cats and dogs, so it would probably be fine.

Interesting!  I didn't notice this before.  People can hear at lower frequencies than cats/dogs/bunnies.
