Hot Hot Hot Thursday

Heat index reaches over 100 today and tomorrow.  We had a perfect day on the beach yesterday because of cloud coverage.  So now we’re looking at things to do inside.
I had another charge on home chef so I contacted them again.  They traced a 2nd acct that was in my ex’s name and I guess my CC attached to it. So I texted the ex to see if he could log in and take off my cc. He said he hadn’t used Home Chef since we were together.  Then a text following; “Did you get a meal from hello fresh? I’m trying to order from them”.  I googled and home chef and hello fresh aren’t even associated with one another! How did his hello fresh order spark a homechef charge?  At any rate, home chef erased payment info on their end to that 2nd account and reimbursed me.  But still a headscratcher.

  • Ugh @charmedpam. That’s so annoying. Extra annoying you have to text ex too.

Work today and tomorrow. It’s been disgusting outside, 104 the last few days. We are trying to stay cool enough and also prevent all of our plants from dying. Luckily H just put a bunch of insulation in the attic and it does seem to be helping a lot coupled with the fact that some of our trees are finally starting to provide real shade for the house. Everyone is coming into the clinic with heat exhaustion and I’m convinced people just don’t know how to handle temperature. I’m not talking about the people who physically can’t go cool down or who lack resources to do so, I’m talking about people who say they “didn’t feel like drinking extra water because they don’t like it.” Bruh, it’s 104 out. If you have the option to get to shade and drink water and Gatorade, you need to do it. I get it makes you pee all day but that’s not a reason to avoid fluids.

Grandma is home and is okay-ish. I think she’s becoming hypotensive when she stands and moves around based off of some BP readings I saw in the hospital. But her pacemaker is okay and she has an upcoming appointment with neurology which is good because she does have a little dementia forming which needs medication and attention. Last week was so rough. My uncle is down from his home state for the next week. I called him on Saturday and told him he needed to come down to help. I’m glad there’s someone there to keep an eye on things.

We also found out for sure that BIL A’s mom’s death was self-inflicted. The autopsy report came back officially. Everyone is stunned. SIL A and I aren’t so stunned, but we’re also the “outsiders.” I had really been hoping for an official rule of natural causes, but I’m not surprised. BIL is taking it hard and it’s like hearing about the death for the first time again for him. There’s nothing we can really say or do to make it better, and it just sucks.

But on a more positive note, they finally finished the pool resurfacing at SIL A’s and we’re so ready for it. Planning on a lazy pool day soon where we can just relax. I won’t lie, the pool really needed help so I’m sure having it redone is going to be extra nice because it was tolerable, but not ideal before.

@levioosa I'm sorry about both the stress and the results of SIL A's MIL's passing.  Deaths by suicide are so hard and I've seen the repercussions take years.  Hugs.

Chiquito continues to have a fever and MIL and FIL tested positive for Covid today.   I used two tests that both showed as expired recently but still sealed and he's neg for both.  My hope is that he continues to improve but....maybe MIL and FIL will watch DS if we now need a backup sitter if he's still sick?   They aren't going to the family wedding and won't go to mass on Sunday which is sad because it's said in honor of our 2nd Niece who passed and BIL and SIL will be in attendance from out of state.

The reality is that I just hope Chiquito is over whatever this is and the dumb fevers go away.

ETA - YES drink fluids!  We have been huge on that with the kids.  FL next month is going to be fluids all the time plus cooling towels.
  • This week has been a blur for no reason other than I’m trying to get through a few different projects so I’m feeling scattered.

My huge office pet peeve right now is people taking calls right in their cubes. I get we don’t have a lot of conference space but it drives me bananas when people take full on meetings where everyone around you can hear.

I used to have a coworker with an office across from my cube.

She was on conference calls most of the day, but would put them on speaker and leave her door open!  She was a brusque, unfriendly person.  I always wondered if she didn't realize how rude and disruptive she was being...don't know how she couldn't know...or just didn't care.

  • Does your office offer a headset option for your phones?  At least then you'd only hear if your co-worker was speaking.

  • I’m so sorry to hear that @levioosa. Prayers to your family.
@VarunaTT.  You’ll cut out a lot on gas even on non scooter days when you have to drive.  I’m the closest to my office now. i do a LOT of leisure travel and still have less milage on my car than my co-workers.
    @STARMOON44 enjoy vay-cay

  • Ugh!  I feel like I was put on the spot again.

Today the big boss sent an e-mail to myself and the person I primarily support (that person works directly for the client), asking us what we think about bringing someone in full or part-time to help me.

It took me an hour to find the "perfect" words.  At least I hope they were, lol.  I find the big boss a bit intimidating and don't know him that well.  So I'm always nervous interacting with him.

It wasn't a very long e-mail.  But I was covering a few things.  And trying to be thorough, but not too wordy.  You all know the "not too wordy" part is NOT my strong suit, lol.

Lol @short+sassy.  What’s your stance? Would you welcome the help or pay you more to do more?

  • Lol @short+sassy.  What’s your stance? Would you welcome the help or pay you more to do more?
I'd like to be paid to do more.  It's weird though because they are very anti-overtime hours for non-engineers even though we are typically paid less.  But a lot of the engineers work OT.  I get time and half, even though I'm salaried.  Maybe the engineers don't, but that seems unlikely because they are very catered to.

But more my concern is they are going to hire someone and it will be great here and there when I'm extra busy, but then the inevitable slower times will come and I'm having to share my scant work with someone else.

That happened before a couple years ago.  That person was at least already an employee and her own main job (in architecture) was in a major lull.  But after she helped me over the hump of crazy work, a few months later that project was almost over.  But she was still billing almost f/t hours to it under the steel department code, while I still needed to charge legitimate hours to it and then felt like I had to share the work with her.  I don't want that situation happening again.

That person still works here, but she's expected to be busy in her own department at the same time things will be picking up for me, so it's not expected she'll be able to help me again.

And ngl, I also don't want a f/t person who could fully take over my job.  More pressure for them to make WFH happen for me.

That’s my fear too.  My current position used to have 3 people.  One moved, one got promoted and my boss said if I ever needed another hire she would.
um.  No.  I want to be the hero here! Lol
