Prudie Day

It is Thursday, right?
Who has helpful tips for dealing with crickets in the house.   Each year as soon as it begins cooling off my basement becomes cricket central...it's unfinished so it's just me getting freaking out as I do laundry.  But they've been very present in our first floor bathroom this year and my kids are totally freaked out.  I am too.  I know there are glue traps but I don't want the kids to see them stuck there hanging around, I do most of the killing behind closed doors lol.

Re: Prudie Day

  • I have heard of putting water with a few tablespoons of molasses in a shallow bowl.  It attracts the crickets and they drown.  You could also use beer in a bowl.  You still have to deal with dead crickets but maybe do this in your basement and they won't get upstairs?

  • I have no luck and slowly go insane when they show up.  I'm told they're "good luck" which is likely a tale told so people just have to deal with the noise.

We have house guests now and their kiddo is totes adorbs.

Chiquito's birthday went well last night and today is the last day of school for the week.  I have soccer schedules and other class schedules and it feels like we're heading into the autumn insanity.
  • I have had crickets from time to time (no basement). I’m pretty good on insects in general.  I’ve always had someone come in and spray.  Orkin used to spray every 2 months and my new service, fox, is every 3.  Something tells me 2 months is more the threshold because a few weeks before they’re scheduled to come in I can see it wearing off and see some critters come out to play. I’m more fearful of spiders though and I’m mostly good on those.  They also spray outside around the house.  Wouldn’t a bowl of beer smell, though? Molasses would be a better scent.

SSDD.  I forgot Monday was a holiday and we get out early on Friday’s.  I would have made better appointment scheduling had I remembered.  They had an opening at 4 for some thread lifts I want done, but I thought I’d be working still. Someone probably took that slot already.
Yesterday was a fun rock ‘n roll bingo night at a local restaurant.  The meetup girls were a fun bunch and I think we all had good food, good drinks and great company.  Two people at our table won.  One lady won the big prize of comedy tickets.  Ask me if I won? Nope. Never do.

  • It's so funny you say this, because last night, I thought we had a cricket in the house. And I thought one of the cats had it cornered by the front door. I was wrong. It was a freaking bat. Needless to say I screamed my damn head off. Don't even understand how it got in there between the screen and front door.

It took me 2.5 hours to get to work today thanks to a truck slamming into a overpass right before the bridge I need to take. I'm already exhausted.

    A bat! In the house?
i’m noping my way outta there!
Edit to add; only way it could stay in my house is if it turned into one of these folks

  • We’ve never had crickets but we did have carpenter ants which are awful. I’d also be terrified of my basement if I heard a bunch of crickets down there.
  • M is back at school today and I’m back in a very quiet office. I love that we have early dismissal tomorrow (we do starting at 3pm the day before a holiday) and a short week next week. I’m sleeping better but still so so exhausted.

I got new running shoes delivered this morning and they made a world of difference!
  • Fuck a bat.  Nope, nope, nope.  Hell to the no.

Good morning. My last day this week. Woohooo.  DH and I are trying to work with SIL and nieces here.  It's very hard, LOL.  At least my oldest niece baked some muffins.

    Prudie coming up.  :)

  • @climbingsingle, I felt a moment of panic just reading your post!  I think bats are pretty cute little animals.  But I certainly don't want one flying around my house.  Plus that could be disastrous with my pets.  Maple Bar the Fearless (cat) would probably stalk it and try to attack the bat.  I doubt that would go well for her.  Izzy the Friendly (dog) might approach the bat to be her new playmate.  That also would not go well.

Hmmm.  We have SO many bugs where I live.  But not really crickets.  I'm sure they exist, but I never hear them.

I found out the deal with the massive IT problems my work has been having for over two weeks.  The client had a ransomware attack!  They didn't pay it, but shut down almost all their systems.  They have been slowly and painfully bringing things back up.

Things are finally almost back to normal.  So now I have a huge backlog of work to do, lol.  I have two weekly reports I send out, but they haven't gone out since the 3rd.

Yeah, the cat was for sure investigating, but I'm glad did nothing other than that. She seemed more confused than anything..lol.
  • I am on the struggle bus today for real. My work project is just a bunch of BS and is so dysfunctional for a variety of reasons. It's got my stress and anxiety up to the point where it's spilling over out of work. It's ... not good. I should take a vacation day tomorrow and try to decompress over a long weekend, but I'd end up just being anxious on my day off instead, so I'll work.

I did use points to buy a new running watch today that should come next week, so I'm excited about that at least. I think tonight is going to be a wine for dinner kind of night.
  • So excited to see The Eras Tour in IMAX since I couldn’t afford to see it live!

I read that this morning too.  It’s a really good way to have fans see the concert who didn’t have thousands to drop on good seats.

cc; other artists please.  I could possibly go to some!

    Same! I cannot wait!
  • I'm realizing that depression might just be a way of life for me and I'm pondering how to deal with that.  I don't mean this to be a downer or asking for help, I'm just realizing that what I always assumed was situational is really just how I exist.  The meds help, the reframing helps, but I'm going to have down periods and I need to figure out a path forward with this.

I have a lovely friend who is having a birthday get together at a local brewery that carries multiple types of an NA beer company that I really like.  I don't want to go, b/c peopling sounds like too much, but also I need to force myself out, so I'm going for a bit.  I recently attended a fundraiser with her and we discussed how much we enjoyed each other's company and that we needed to hang out more, so I want to make this effort.  It's close to home, so I can always Irish exit if I need to.

I just found out the big fancy schmany LGBTQ+ fundraiser here locally is bringing in Anthony Rapp as the guest speaker.  I wasn't going to go, but I LOOOOVE him in Star Trek  and so I'm considering it.  I don't really have much fun at the fundraiser though, so IDK., $200 bucks just to maybe meet him and hear a probably boring speech from him and not drink the free booze and eat banquet chicken, sounds kinda terrible.  Plus I'd have to get a gown and I'm not feeling that at all.
