Fake Holiday Friday

It isn't a holiday for me but DH is home because his company is a government contractor and he has the day off.  He's currently doing his favorite thing to do on a day off that the kids are in school: sleep.

Vaccines went well last night.   My arm feels like I got hit repeatedly but other than that I have no other side effects...yet?  The 3 of us received Pfizer (Chiquito the child dose) and Chiquito had no complaints.   Since we're past the 12 hour mark I'm hopeful that I'm at least in the clear for the body aches that I felt.

Weekend plans are shaping up.   Tomorrow is DH's 25th HS reunion so we're leaving Chiquito with the in-laws and Chiquita is heading to a Girl Scout family where they'll go up to a camp and do glow in the dark archery.   I'm excited to see how it goes and I love the family.  The daughter is someone who takes no BS and has defended Chiquita to bullies.  The world needs more kids like her.

We had drama last night after Chiquita's soccer coach gave Chiquito some water bottle stickers.  The little guy decorated his door with them and Chiquita felt that she should have had more (she got some too) and stole a few to put on her water bottle.  We had some serious discussions about poor character, theft and the judgement made.

Re: Fake Holiday Friday

  • Oof, @banana468, that sounds like a lot.

I"m so glad today is Friday.  I'm still feeling unsettled at work in the new place, trying to get routines and basic things figured out.  I feel weird about my working relationship, but I think most of it is in my head, which is always fun.  My paper ornaments are ready for decoration and I'm excited about doing that.  Tomorrow, my buddy is coming over with his truck and I'm finally getting rid of another round of Goodwill donations and computer recycling stuffs.  Then, I think I'm ready to hunker down for cold weather with hot tea, books, and my cat.

Thinking about seeing Killers of the Flower Moon tomorrow.  I do want to see it, but I'm so tired of 3 hour movies.  Put in an intermission!!  I can't even make it through a 90 minute movie without going to the restroom once.
  • I worked for a government contractor years ago.  One of the best things about it was getting ALL the Federal holidays.  The company I currently work for is stingy.  This isn't a holiday for us either.

I have really flaked on planning my Cincinnati trip over Thanksgiving.  But I think/hope that I finally have everything narrowed down.  I finally asked for my boss's approval and it was given.  I have got to books things today before things get any worse.

The flights are the most hateful part!  No direct flights. They are all long and expensive, considering it's a close enough distance I could drive there in 11 hours.  Which is tempting.  It would save me $1K on flights and a rental car.  That's like paying myself $500/day to drive.  But such abject misery.  I don't think I can subject myself to that.  As much as it sucks waiting around in an airport and being on a plane, it's still more relaxing than driving.

Your kids don’t have it off, @banana468? I guess I remember going to school on Remembrance/Veterans day… but I always thought it was a school holiday? My brother did his annual shave (normally has a beard that ages him 10 years lol) and went to school in his marine uniform for his kids.  The oldest is very proud his dad was a marine and wants to be one too. But he also wants to be an actor. And President of the United States.
Not a day off for me, but I’m going to do minimal work in boycott of it, lol.
Sing it @VarunaTT, back in my day movies were 1.5 to 2 hours long, and if they put that movie on primetime TV, they cut shit out to make room for the commercials! Lets go back to those days.

SSDD for me.  Actually nothing really going on this weekend.  There’s a meetup I’m eyeing for dinner tomorrow, and there’s one spot left but it’s at an expensive Italian restaurant (not my fave) AND I know someone who’s going and she’s exhausting. At least there’s never any awkward silence with her…. I don’t think I’ll go.  I think I’ll take myself to a 1.5 or 2 hour movie instead lol.
    edit; for my fat fingers

  • Our town has school on (or for the observance of) Veteran's Day.  They make a huge deal of it.  Chiquito has a walk-a-thon as part of the day today at the elementary school and they invite former or current active service members to attend an assembly.

In the middle school, they do the same inviting former and current service members to attend, the 8th grade chorus sings patriotic songs for them and then the service members go to the grade groups for the students to meet.  Later Chiquita's grade group will walk to a local cemetery (you can see it from her school) and will lay a wreath on grave area of deceased veterans.  It's pretty impressive and IMO a better way to celebrate than how I guarantee most would celebrate if they had the day off.
  • @CharmedPam, nothing about that meetup sounds good, unless it is meeting/liking some of the other people.  Skip it!

Your nephew can do all of those things!  Ronald Reagan did.  Though he was in the Army, not the Marines.

Over half the US presidents have served in the military.  Being an actor is the more unusual one.  At least historically.

But now it seems like being famous can be a stepping stone to political office.

Ronald Reagan ran!  So fellow AHs like Donald Trump and Arnold Schwarzenegger could walk.

  • Also not a holiday but we have early release. We get a floating holiday because it falls on a Saturday so I’m working.

H is at camp and I’m exhausted. I always sleep like garbage the first night he’s gone so I’m hoping I’ll get better rest tonight.
  • Happy Fri-Yay!  We have meet-up plans this weekend with a couple of my college roommates.  One is coming through town tomorrow and we'll meet her and DH for breakfast.  They live in CA and we haven't seen them since our wedding 17 years ago!  Sunday we have tentative plans with another former roommate and her DH.  We traveled with them on our NE/Canada cruise in Sept.

I may be hosting Thanksgiving.  My cousin usually does and was insistent they still could despite building a new home & moving in this weekend.  Now it sounds like they are having second thoughts.  My mom will have the low down when she comes over this afternoon.  If we are hosting, I need to know ASAP so I can start planning in my head!

We had gutters cleaned and windows washed (inside & out) this week so I think we are prepared for winter.  It's supposed to be in the 50s next week so I may take advantage and put out our few outside Christmas decorations before it gets really cold.  I'd love to wait until just after Thanksgiving but the ground will likely be frozen by then and working with winter gloves on isn't ideal.  So we'll see.

Two friends at work are being having their jobs eliminated.  One is a year away from retirement and the other moved to another state to be near family so they need fully remote positions.  Those are filled quickly at our institution.

I know, @short+sassy, I was gonna add - so he wants to be Ronald Regan, but someone pulled me away for work and I JUST SAID I WASN’T GONNA WORK!!! Nephew was George Washington for Halloween and I have to say, he made the cutest Washington.
Oh no @MNNEBride! That one person who is 1 year away from retirement, are they able to retire early? How do you job hunt knowing you’re that close?
i agree @banana468, that’s a great way to spend it. We had an assembly for it growing up, I remember, I just don’t know if we did it a day before the 11th.  But maybe we didn’t because I also remember the moment of silence at 11:00 on the 11th. So maybe it’s always been a day off for State workers only?

  • I took today off with PTO but we don’t have it off in general at work.

Yesterday was a lot. I have a new MA but she’s just as slow (maybe even slower) than the old one! And so so scattered. I went to admin and asked if she was a brand new MA and nope, years of experience?! I can say that she is very sweet, and teachable, but I don’t know ultimately how teachable someone is if they’ve been working for years and are still making certain very basic mistakes. I’ve worked with so many MAs. I know this is not the norm. I don’t know why they keep giving me these staff members. I mean the base problem is I just need to transfer or find another company, but I have another year until I can do that. I also had a patient yesterday who made me deeply uncomfortable. I had to ask for rescue and a chaperone so I could get out of the room. I’m going to go and talk to patient relations next week when I’m back because this patient should only have male providers. No women should have to see him.

Otherwise SSDD. I did a fantastic total body work out class on Tuesday but I had too much hubris and also I had never done the class before so when the instructor told us to “start with the lightest weight, really light weight” I pshawed and had a lighter weight than my usual max, but not light light and now I am paying the price. I can’t remember the last time I was this sore lol.

Today I have to run an errand that I missed out on because Monday I was taking care of my parents and I am salty about the drive on my day off. Parents are recovering slowly but are still sick, but well enough that I’m going to take care of myself today. I plan on enjoying the house alone. I love H so much, and I know he’s having a hard time, but he has been home ALL THE TIME and I’m losing my mind. Between his WFH days and the fact that I lost a free day off work I’m never home alone any more. And it turns out, uhhh, I really need that.

  • Sorry I'm not here much. Things are super busy.

Had a phone pre-interview Wednesday and that went really hopeful. They were presenting me to managers and hearing back today or Monday.
Obv right now I've lost my charger so I'm trying to be super gentle on cell use and I hate it.

BK is in judo now so Wednesday nights are a bit chaotic. M wants to join karate instead of the gym - i know he enjoyed it before but I think him and scheduled classes is honestly better. He was really good at going to the gym when he saw trainer.

She is very cute in her little outfit and one of the instructors {she's not black belt so isn't a sensei} has taken to BK and helping. Admittedly they give BK a lot of leeway as she is smallest and the youngest there.

Feel free to snoop me btw

Kylo is in his toddler era and that involved knocking hamster cage over other day. May have been accident but idk. Jellybeans was ok - scared but ok. I consoled him and once all was settled he was ok. I gave him extra treats when I refilled his food.

    I'm having a bi-lateral tubal soon, so for a bit I'll be able to be on here a bit more :) {it's the new version of having your tubes done - fairly detailed so google it}

Uhm .... idk what else LOL

So sorry you were put in that position @levioosa.  But yay for a workout and alone time!
hi @MissKittyDanger.  FX for that interview process.
I’ve never done Polar Express but I can imagine it would be fun for the kids!
edit; darn! My brother comes in from the countryside once a year (or so he says, he’ll be starting to) for Thanksgiving.  I looked up Chicago’s polar express because I think the kids would love it, and it starts Dec 3rd.

  • @MissKittyDanger, I was wondering what had happened to you.  Good to hear from you.  Glad to hear things are going well.  Good luck with the potential new job.  I hope your bi-lateral tubal procedure goes well.

  • @CharmedPam we're taking the kids to a Christmas train ride thing at the Illinois railway museum (in Union, IL?) in December - not the same as the polar express rides but supposed to be really fun!
  • I’ve heard of Union.  Honestly, the kids will like anything to do with trains. They run on the 25th…. So maybe.  Thanks for the tip!
