Tuesday

Woke up to snow today! Not a lot and it's not cold enough to stick for long, but it's nice to look at while i'm working! What's up with everyone?

We had the same snow @casadena! LOL.  It won’t stick.  Thank goodness! Snow is pretty but it hits different when you have to remove it yourself or pay someone to.

Last month I won a raffle for a 1/2 hr psychic/medium reading and cashed in on that last night.  It was emotional because I usually do a “where’s my love life headed?” reading and this time I just wanted to connect to the otherside, given four people passed from my life in one year.  I wanted to connect with my SIL and Grandpa mostly.  Grandma came through too.  She always does :)
I will say she wasn’t 100% on point - like she normally is. She was reaching with some stuff that just seemed too general and fit with most people. I’d say she was 75% accurate though, which is enough for me. My SIL’s sister was brought up and part of me wondered if I should have gifted that reading to her? Maybe she needed to hear from her and would have gotten more out of it? But I have no idea if she even believes in that stuff.  Is it weird to ask? We both can’t afford her at a regular rate. It’s like $145 a reading, but she does these free reading raffles monthly.

  • Yesterday was a snow day for BK lol

Surgery is tomorrow at 1pm - luckily IL's are able to pick up BK and take her to their place. Might feed her dinner, but we'll see.
The plan is M is at least getting me settled before picking her up

Last night M finally got to get the Bluey game for PS5 and while he was gone, BK and I were chilling. We hear this weird sound ....
We know it's Kylo.  Wander upstairs. Nothing.

Eventually I open the pantry {it truly sounded like there} and nothing.
BK shouts to open the door again - Kylo is at the top of our pantry!

He jumps from there to the floor lmao
BK and I are dying laughing!
He really is such a goblin cat lol
  • I *finally* got back to working out this week.  I'd been getting back to it and then got that infection. It took more than a month to clear up where I felt safe to workout.  Everything hurts, but in a good way.  LOL  I was going to be lazy and wait until the new year and will probably fall off during Christmas, but DH went back to the office this week since BIL is back in town and they're working on stuff together and I have zero excuses distractions.

SSDD otherwise.  I have a two hour meeting today and a 1.5 hour meeting tomorrow.  Ugh.  It's December people...I'm trying to work as little as possible.  LOL

  • @MissKittyDanger healthy surgery vibes your way
Love snow, that’s so nice @Casadena
Glad it was a good reading @CharmedPam

SSDD at work and unfortunately a pretty busy (busier than usual) evening but it is what it is.
  • Not much here. Back at the office after Covid, PTO, and WFH- it’s been like two weeks since I was last here. I’m so ready for vacation. I’m taking the last two weeks of the month off, and I’m only working one week in January before the baby so I’m swamped trying to get everything set for leave and I’m just…over it. I’m tired and ready for a break.
  • I'm debating on if I want to go to an animal preserve or not this month.  I've been there before and absolutely loved it.  But it's 2 hours away which is a lot of driving for one day.  But they have two baby zebras right now and you can book a special encounter to bottle feed them!  They also have a capybara encounter.  I'll have to see if I can book both encounters for one trip.  If so, I don't think I can resist.

Other than that, I am slogging away at work.  I'm fairly busy, which I like.   Also trying to keep my rampant coughing at bay so I don't drive my coworkers nuts.  I have been wearing a mask when in community areas.  It's like, I'd feel guilty if I called in sick but then I also feel guilty for coming in sick.  You can't win sometimes, lol.

  • No snow for me any time soon, but it's supposed to get down to the 20s tonight. I'm so not ready for this kind of cold. I don't even know where my gloves are!

Anyway, SSDD. I have a big deadline 12/15 with work that I'm trying to get to, and then I'll just coast for the rest of the year. I'm taking off the last week to go out to Utah to see some snow. I guess I'd better find gloves after all.

    I love this story!

My H and I had a similar experience about a year ago.  We heard Maple Bar meowing in our kitchen.  But for the life of us, we couldn't find her.  Our kitchen is tiny, so there weren't many places she could be.  We checked the rooms next to the kitchen, jic the sound was bouncing weirdly and she wasn't actually in the kitchen.  But no Maple Bar.

She will usually come when you call her, so we were doing that also.  But it just made her meows faster and louder.  We went back to the kitchen and a couple minutes later, my H looks up and sees her on the TOP of the refrigerator!

We assume she is meowing because she wants help getting down.  So my H reaches up to pick her up and she backs away from him, lol.  He finally lured her enough to get her down.

For awhile, it was her new spot.  And she would meow when she wanted to get down, but play the same "keep away" game.  Then she figured out she could jump down the floor just fine, though it's a little scary to watch, lol.

Good luck with your surgery tomorrow.  I hope you have a smooth and swift recovery.

I was curious about snowfall in Atlanta and looked it up.  It was a bit more than I thought.  I assumed you all went years without any snow.  But it averages about 2 snowfall days/year with an average total accumulation of 0.59".

Utah sounds like a great trip!  I've heard a lot of the state is beautiful, but have never been there.  Plus it's fun to visit snow especially when it's on a vacation.

I've lived in NOLA for 25 years and it has only snowed here three times.  The last time was almost 15 years ago in 2008.

Other snow facts I found in my rabbit hole.  Atlanta's worst snowfall day was 10" in 1940.  For New Orleans, it was 8" in 1895.

  • Had a fun lunch with my friend today and am getting ready to go meet another friend for drinks. She is waiting on the birth of her first grandchild so this may be the only time I get to see her before that.

Pup is driving me crazy today with the chewing on stuff. Ugh he is so darn cute then he does this crap! He is a 7.9 lb. ball of energy.  H is still coughing and not being able to talk much so no dance lessons for us today. That is fine with me.

Wow, even that's more than I would have thought! I'd say we get flurries or a dusting most years, but it's been about 3 years since I've had enough to make a snowball. I guess because it just doesn't stick, especially in the more dense areas where I've lived? Or maybe it's more like 2-3 inches every couple of years averaged out? Are you still planning Ocala? I think they're the same as NOLA - you have to worry more about frozen iguanas than snow.

I've only been to Utah in the summer for hiking, but the Rockies are so beautiful! I've heard that it's as pretty as Colorado in the snow for half the cost, so we'll see. It's my sister's 40th, so we're making it a whole thing. I'm beyond excited!

No, not Ocala anymore.  We were kind of sad about that, because we'd spent about a year researching and day-dreaming about it.

But one of the worries I always had about FL, even central FL, is I'd find myself in a similar "insurance has become impossible" which is a big reason I'm leaving NOLA.  And then there were two major hurricanes that hit FL last year and even more insurers left that state.  Other than the summer, the weather and the natural beauty was great there.  But the job market is scant and low paying, so that was another reason.

My H and I went to Cincinnati over Thanksgiving break to cement our decision to move there instead.  We are planning to do that sometime in spring next year.  It gets colder there than how I prefer my weather to be, but not too bad either.  Better pay with more job opportunities and a lower COL than either NOLA or FL.  I can't beat the financial math!  Hard to tell if you'll like place over just a few days.  But, other than it having more industrial and rundown areas than I was expecting, we liked what we saw.

It's a little bit warmer in Ocala than it is in NOLA, but overall it's similar temperatures.  I looked up snow.  Apparently, it rarely snows at all in the entire state.  And when it does, it's usually just flurries in the northern part.  I did see a fun fact that the last time it snowed in Orlando was 1977.  Ocala is about 90 minutes north of that.

I forgot about falling, frozen iguanas!  Poor lizards.  As well as any person they might accidentally fall on.

That does make Utah sound even more enticing.  I like the idea of a similar CO experience, but cheaper.  What a great way for your sister to celebrate her 40th!

I find this interesting because the people that I know that have lived in Cincy have loved it and not mentioned this at all. DS2 lives in Dayton but goes to Cincy frequently to visit friends. Granted he goes to the northside of the city so he isn't necessarily in the downtown area proper.
  • Just throwing my .02 cents in, I wouldn’t leave Louisiana based on having this in your state;

Or, you know, I could just make a vacation out of it.  Lol

Oh fun!  I've never heard of this place.  But alas, it is in northern LA and 4 hours away from me.

Of all odd things, the city it is in (Natchitoches) is known for their meat pies.  Even down here in New Orleans, the meat pies are usually from a company from there or described as Natchitoches-style.  They're pretty yummy.  It's seasoned ground beef in a fried dough pocket.  Hard to go wrong!

It might be because, without any familiarity with neighborhoods, we were driving past houses that looked like the best deals and in the price range we would like to stay in.  So we'd be excited about the sizes and prices.  Drive out to that area and it was one of the better houses on the street, but not even that cute in person.  Amongst a bunch of other drab looking houses, it looked drab also.

We also really like architecturally interesting houses, which tend to be from the 1800s and early 1900s.  And those also tend to be closer to downtown.

But there were a lot of cute neighborhoods also that we liked.  And we were never more than a few miles from the downtown.  I'd assume as neighborhoods become further out from the core, they become newer and more suburban-like.

We did discover it would be too hard to buy a house from out-of-state because there were too often deal-breakers that we couldn't tell from the listing.  So we are going to move first and get a month-to-month rental.  Unfortunately, that will be more cost and hassle, but it will help us make sure we really find the right place.  That will also give us time to explore more further out areas.

This was my experience living in Toledo and visiting Cincy as well.

But I’d say this is also consistent with a lot of northern/rust belt or former rust belt cities. You have a lot of industrial areas that are too expensive to be torn down and the ability to repurpose and reuse is limited/ also really expensive. We have some great examples of it working well in Buffalo and still a lot of industrial remnants that are just sitting there.

This is what I was thinking too. I grew up in Louisville, just about an hour or so from Cincy and know exactly what you're talking about. The south just doesn't have that, at least not on that scale, because factories just weren't as common.

I remember thinking that Philly reminded me of Ohio and being so confused until I realized it was the rust belt relics.
  • BIL and SIL live adjacent to one of those rundown/industrial areas in Cincy.  They live in a Craftsman-style house that was built at the turn of the 1900's(ish).  Their little town within the city is cute and quiet.  I was surprised at the vibe being more east coast-ish in Cincy than midwest when we first started traveling there often.

Yeah I don't think of either Dayton or Cincy as being factory towns. I'm more familiar with the universities and prep schools. My son works for a software company that has been in Dayton forever - I don't know what they did before software but they support the car industry with sales and inventory software. They moved to an office park area several years ago (long before he started there) and the park has a lot of research looking companies in it. It is a very nice campus. Native Daytonians remember when they were downtown though.
