question for groomsmen suits

Hi to all!

My fiancée and I are currently in the early planning stages of our wedding. We've been in the wedding party a few times and one of the most stressful things I've seen people go through is the groomsmen's tuxedo rentals. Is it absolutely necessary for the groomsmen to rent or buy their tuxedo from the same place, or can they bring what they have (or buy if it's within their budget) as long as it's the correct color? I've heard some brides say that the shades of black the groomsmen need to all be the same type of black, but the stress of the wedding party doesn't seem worth it, and I'm not sure if that's the kind of thing I'll notice in 15 years looking at the pics. Any advice is helpful!

Re: question for groomsmen suits

  • I personally think it is great that you are trying to be so considerate of your wedding party. I don't think it will make a difference. My daughter was in a wedding where all the bridesmaids were asked to wear black dresses ( no particular style or fabric) they all looked fine. I couldn't even tell you what the men wore. In my her wedding, my daughter asked her bridesmaids to wear navy dresses. Again, they were all different materials and shades of navy. They looked great.
  • The last wedding that I went to had all the guys in black suits. I only noticed that they were different because my husband and I had a conversation about what number of buttons are in style right now. You can get them all matching ties or vests to tie them together.
  • I don't think this matters. They may not really need to match, either. If you are having a formal wedding and want them to wear tuxes, though, they may be stuck renting, as most guys don't own a tuxedo unless they attend a lot of formal events. My husband didn't buy one until he was in his mid thirties and needed one frequently enough to justify owning one.
  • Our preference is for the groomsmen suits to be uniform in color, but we are flexible about it. We requested them to match the color and shade of their ties. They can get the suits from different sources, whether they want to rent or purchase them.
  • i would just be happy that they are wearing suits at all. But I think they will be wearing black suits.
  • Just popping in to say LOVE the idea!  Been to too many that it's mandated down to the grandfathers and usually the rental is as much or far more than purchasing an actual suit they get to keep!

If you want an element of matching in a specific way, get all of the guys a matching tie and call it golden!
  • Sure. It is probably nicer if the guys buy some suit of basic quality or use one they have. That saves money and hopefully will be worn again apart from the wedding. But many will likely defer to our specific interests, even if a bit far reaching on others.
