Elopement Invites? Save the Dates?

Hi everyone! My FH and I have decided to do an elopement this December and I am wondering what the process is for elopement invites/ save the dates. When would be proper to send them out? We want to do an invite because we still want this to be a formal event and we are doing a dinner afterwards with those invited as well as plans for the following day. Any advice? I'm confused.  Are you having an elopement or an intimate wedding? 

An elopement has no guests and is done in secret.   If any guests join you they are there but keeping a secret. 
 

The impression I'm getting is that you're not eloping and instead you're having a small formal wedding.  Is that the case?  If so I would follow the same time line so your guests that you're inviting know that they're invited to your wedding on X date and it can lay out the formality.

yeah, that’s not an elopement. Sounds like an intimate wedding.
