Post Holiday Tuesday

Did everyone have a nice weekend?

Re: Post Holiday Tuesday

  • Weekend was nice - we were in IA and spent a few days playing around the farm, taking the boys to visit our alma mater! They picked out shirts and cute mascot keychains to put on their backpacks. Also visited a bird rescue that has eagles/owls/hawks and they were all visible and active! Very fun.

And sorry for the downer on a Monday morning:

I was in Iowa all last week. My dad called me last Sunday to tell me that hospice did not think my grandma would make it through the night - so i left ASAP to make sure I got to see her. My sister had flown in the day before for the same reason so we all got to be there. Spent most of Monday with her and she passed late last Monday night. We spent the week planning and prepping for the funeral and helping my parents around the house. H brought the boys on Thursday and we came home yesterday. Services were lovely and all my cousins were able to come back so it was nice to see the. Spent the weekend messing around the farm and chasing the boys. I think it was nice for my mom have a distraction. Back at work today and it feels pretty surreal and i'm a little numb still. I'm sure the next week will be hard - i went straight from planning to kid wrangling and haven't really taken time to process.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss @Casadena that’s so tough.
  • Weekend was all right. Friday J went back to the doctor and his weight is still low (now down to 3rd percentile). It’s so rough, he *looks* bigger but only gained half a pound in a week. So we’re upping his reflux meds and I’m cutting out soy. It’s just been a lot.

Saturday was M’s mini marathon in the city and my BFF’s twins birthday. She did a Taylor Swift theme and the kids loved it so much. Sunday I ran a half marathon then we hung in my sisters pool. Yesterday we did dinner at MILs and everyone was exhausted. At least the boys slept well!

So sorry for your loss @Casadena, I’m glad that you were there, and your sister, and your cousins
Sorry for the weight stress @charlotte989875, J will get where he has to be, but of course youre worried now

Long weekend  was really nice (it was a four day for us, we were off Fri + Mon) - one of my sisters and I brought our kids to Legoland on Friday, and we piled into a hotel room together Friday night. Saturday and Sunday were pool time and bbqs both days, and yesterday was our local Memorial Day parade, cleaning/errands and some prep cooking.

@Casadena, my sympathies to your family.  I'm sorry for your loss.  I'm glad you and your sister were able to make it back in time.

Alas, not a 3-day weekend for me.  My work "trades" Memorial Day for Mardi Gras, so we all had to work yesterday or take a vacation day.  I've had other jobs do something like this also.  But usually it's President's Day or MLK day, which are at least around the same time.  Except my work is chintzy with holidays and neither President's Day nor MLK Day are holidays.

I went to Winn-Dixie (Southern grocery chain) after work yesterday.  Wow!  They were almost empty!  Hitting a grocery store in the early evening on a holiday is apparently a good tactic, lol.  They were selling tuna fillets for only $7/pound, which is unheard of and I was really excited.  It's usually 3x that.  Unfortunately, they only had 2 lbs left for the day, but at least I was able to scoop that up.

    Rant:

I got some bad news and I am incredibly angry.  I picked up my new glasses at Costco on Friday.  Initially, they seemed fine.  But when I got home and tried to read something on my phone or look at my computer, it was slightly blurry.  I could still read the words for the most part, but it was uncomfortable because they were was a "fuzz" around them.  It's enough that I can't really use them for either of those things.  Which is 80-90% of my life.

I called the store on Sunday and explained my predicament.  The guy looked up my prescription and told me it was only "for distance", which is why I can't see anything up close.  He said I would need to go back to my optometrist...who btw, is also at that same Costco store...and get a new prescription.  But here's the kicker.  Because the optometrist is an independent business and not "part" of Costco...despite literally being inside their store...I'll have to 100% pay for the lenses to be redone.

I pointed out that what he just told me is I wasted hundreds of dollars on glasses I can't use.  That while my optometrist is the worst person in this scenario, the optician who helped me apparently also could have told me the glasses would be for "distance only" and didn't.  NOBODY wants glasses that they can only use for distance!  Obviously!  He said "It happens sometimes that an optometrist's prescription is wrong, but we're not responsible."

To which I replied something like, "Then why don't you all warn people about that?  Because I never would have gambled $400 of my money on a 'maybe'.  Especially since I bought TWO pairs of glasses.  I would have bit the bullet and paid for an eye exam somewhere else that also sold glasses.  So the money and insurance used for this whole process would have been covered."

He told me I should speak to the Optical Department's manager.  That he can't promise me anything, but she might be able to help me.  He did say the optometrist would probably re-do my exam for free.  But if the department manager isn't going to do anything for me about the lenses, I'm not going back to the hack doctor who gave me a bad prescription.  I'll just have to start completely fresh somewhere else.  And it will be 100% out of pocket, because my insurance was already used for a worthless eye exam and a worthless pair of glasses.

  • @short+sassy I'd start to complain up the food chain.  I wear my glasses in place of contacts often and they are the SAME.  And even if the optometrist is an independent contractor, by associating with him in their brick and mortar store, it's the impression that they stand by the reputation of that work and prescription.

Weekend went well!  Chiquita's presentation was Friday night and we are finishing off the last of the uneaten cupcakes that weren't consumed.  Saturday was a busy day with her doing a helping job for her co-girl scouts, DH put up a zip line and I picked up plants for the garden beds.  Sunday we had church, I planted and weeded for the afternoon and we had the Memorial Day vigil on the town green that the kids participated in.

Monday we woke up to think we were preparing for the parade to see that our mailbox was on the front lawn and the post was in half.  After reviewing the doorbell camera our theory is that it was hit by a drunk driver who kept going.   I think that makes it the 4th time our mailbox was hit and the 5th time something in the front yard was hit. Currently taking offers from those who need to make a quick insurance claim!
  • @banana468, geez!  What is wrong with people?  Yeah, probably alcohol.

A b/f I had in college lived next door to a house that would have a car drive into their living room about every 8-10 years.  It was a traffic grid where one street ended and their street was perpendicular to it.  That house was directly in the path, if a car didn't turn.  It is a completely residential area where the speed limit was 25mph.  Plus lots of cars that would take out their mailbox/mess up their front yard, but at least braked in time to not hit the house.

But that was a good life lesson at a young age.  Don't buy a house or live somewhere, with that kind of configuration!

@Casadena, I'm very sorry for your loss.

@banana468, sorry to hear about your mailbox. How annoying!

I actually had to work this weekend. I found my inbox full of "code red" assignments requiring "priority" work. Yesterday, I felt so tired that I just vegged out.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss @casadena

Ugh that's so annoying @short+sassy. I wouldn't even think to ask "what distance is this prescription for?" because I would assume if I went to my optometrist with the issues the prescription would reflect that. Heck, even my last appointment I was like, "I'm having to move things closer and closer to see them.  :#" and my optometrist was like, "yup, in a few years you'll probably need bifocals."  :'(:s So I can't imagine her just giving me half the prescription unless it wasn't compatible, and we would discuss that.

Weekend was tiring. It was SIL B's graduation on Saturday and thank goodness that is over. She was 20 minutes late to the brunch she only gave us an hour to have lol. She was a little upset we only went to the first half of the day but I don't know what she expected. It's crazy to think people should attend graduation events from 10 am to midnight. I don't even give people that much time with a wedding. She said something pretty insulting to me but I'm trying to just roll my eyes and let go. I just cannot with her. I also feel like it's ridiculous that she was hurt when we actually attended a meal AND we went to her entire first 2 hour ceremony.

Otherwise SSDD. We went to bed later than anticipated last night but we did that to ourselves.

  • 10 - midnight in one day? No way! I couldn’t do it for any social event.
so sorry for your loss @Casadena
My script is distance @short+sassy, but I’ve always bought online and specified that.  Very annoying that you gave them the script and they didnt call to ask or let you know.  I would go higher up on that!
@banana468 are you a corner house or just unlucky? Our mailbox would get knocked off a few times too when we lived on a corner.
    @ei34 your weekend sounds perfect.

Mine was actually pretty good. We couldn’t use the boat because of terrible weather on Sunday and my nephews birthday party/dinner Saturday.  But my family did some antique shopping, stopped at a winery for some excellent wine and music and then had dinner.  We were in the path of a tornado so my mom’s neighbor came over and we played a fun game of password to ride out the storm.
a few tornadoes touched down in the area. I’ll attach the pic that was posted on my parent’s marina just a mile or so away.  They had tornado damage 2 months ago and some shops are still rebuilding! Craziness.
I’m so glad today was a wfh day because I escaped to a salon on lunch to get a set of acrylics on. It’s been awhile.  I sort of miss them but my natural nails were doing so well up until this weekend.  I wasn’t able to tend to them like usual.  I need to apply a strengthening coat every other day or so. Otherwise….bye bye nails.

  • @CharmedPam we're in the middle of the street!  The house is at a straight section after some turns and the only thing I can think of is that people lose some aspect of path management / depth perception.
  • @CharmedPam Everyone is always like "earthquakes and California! How terrifying!" Sure, the big one is going to happen one day, but I cannot fathom living in an environment where you know for sure tornados are going to happen with regularity. I saw that (Houston?) storm the other day where within 30 seconds the sky turned black and a massive tornado touched down. No thank you. Also I would absolutely panic about my pets and getting them sheltered in time.

@banana468 We are in the middle of a street and someone has taken our mailbox out twice. Why? How? Who are these people just slamming into mailboxes constantly?

This is such a pet peeve of mine also!

Especially since it often comes up in New Orleans, aka Land of Hurricanes, when I mention I grew up in CA.

"Oh!  I could never live anywhere that has earthquakes!"  Well, I don't know anyone whose house was destroyed by an earthquake (though it can happen).  I know lots of people whose homes were destroyed by flooding or a hurricane, at least once in their life.

Their counter to that is at least you can evacuate for a hurricane.  Which I suppose if fair enough.  But hurricanes are way more common than a major earthquake.

  • And I don't know if everyone remembers but we're up to FOUR mailboxes and one BOAT!
  • @ILoveBeachMusic, I'm glad you had such a great trip!  I'd love to go to Portugal someday.  I haven't been to Tuscany either.  But have liked the other areas of Italy I've been to.

My ancestry is Portuguese on my mom's side.  Though they came from the Azores, which I'm sure is an amazing place to visit also.  But it's so remote and not exactly a hop, skip, and a jump from the mainland.
