Thinking about skimping on the cake.

My family is full of foodies and I'm hesitant to go cheap on the cake because of this.  On the other hand, will anyone really notice?  It's not like I remember the last wedding where the cake was phenomenal.  Thoughts?

Re: Thinking about skimping on the cake.

  • Are you planning on another type of dessert?
  • Oh my friends who are foodies would notice especially if you didn't have another dessert. We offered 3 flavors at DD's wedding and our friends are still talking about how delicious it was almost 9 years later. Another friend's daughter had a variety of yummy pies and we recall that we fondness as well. Don't skimp!
  • I don't think you need to go all out on cake, but I don't think it's a good idea to go bottom of the barrel either. I can't really remember having an amazing cake at a wedding, but I certainly remember the one that tasted like sawdust.

It's sort of a matter of your budget and options available, but I've often found that the better tasting cake is the less fancy one. Our local grocery (Publix) makes fantastic cakes, but they may not be the intricate designs that you'd see from a specialty bakery.

Your comments gave me an idea.  Great cake for the foodies and close family and decent for the kids tables etc.  We have a ton of guests, the majority being business and that would solve the problem.  Thanks!

Yeah, that’s really not a great idea. You shouldn’t be giving a “better” dessert to people that you think will enjoy it more. I was thinking more along the line of cupcakes, pies, cookies. If you’re set on serving cake, it needs to be the same cake for all of your guests. Anything else would be really rude.

Yeah this.  Unless you literally have a kid's meal and kid's dessert there is no way that this will go over well.  Have the same dessert for everyone or you could find that this creates serious animosity over those who really like their cake.

I don't want to walk up to a relative to find out that some cousins got the cake with the ganache and passion fruit filling and I've got supermarket icing.
