Much needed Friday

What a week.  How are you @mrsconn23?
Hoping everyone has some relaxation etched into the weekend!

Re: Much needed Friday

  • Not too much going on this weekend which is how I like it.  The kids want to go to our district's homecoming tomorrow (there's rain in the forecast that I'm hoping remains lol).  Mass, some cooking, some cleaning, I just started a new book I'm enjoying, that's about it.
  • Hope you got to have some bourbon last night @mrsconn23! H was laid off right after M was born and for a while things just felt unsettled. Hope the package is good enough where you can just be for a bit before figuring out next steps.

It was too hot for bourbon last night, but not for tequila.  LOL

I'm still waiting for HR to email me the exit package info, but if it's what they said it will be on the call, then the opportunity to just 'be' for at least a few weeks is there.  I don't trust those mf'ers at the moment.  Hahaha.

I wouldn't technically need a job until next year, but I'm not a person who could sit around for that long and not go stir crazy.  This is unchartered territory, so we'll see where the ride takes me.  ;)
  • Was your exit date immediate or do you have a transition period?

We're looking at a fairly chill weekend here too. We might go for happy hour tonight, but not if we get this predicted storm. Tomorrow should be really nice, so maybe do a hike or a long neighborhood walk and then college football in the afternoon. Sunday we're doing a whiskey themed 5k with a group of friends. It ends with a whiskey tasting at a brewery that's in a super hip part of town, so I'm hoping to bum around a little with our friends that don't really go in town much.
  • I'm really sorry @mrsconn23. It sounds like a bunch of fuckery all around. The least HR could do would be to give you the paperwork asap.

Work today. There's a decently large fire nearby and the air quality is horrible. I'm surprised I didn't see any ash floating around when I got out of the car this morning but it will probably be there at the end of the day. It was 115 F out yesterday and disgusting.

H installed the flooring to the bathroom last night, and when I get home we might actually have a working toilet and sink! Apparently it's going to be my job to paint the baseboards when I get home though. We don't have any real weekend plans right now. I thought about going to see my grandparents but my grandfather is sick right now. I don't know if I have it in me to see my parents. Monday is going to be a hell of a day with like 7 different appointments and I have to gear up for that.

  • You’re taking it pretty well, all things considering @mrsconn23.  How ironic for your work too
@charlotte989875!  115, @levioosa? Hard pass. Want to come to Chicago? Beautiful weather here! 70’s/60’s the next few days.

tonight is 1776 the musical with my friend.  We got tickets real inexpensive last Thursday but woot for that! Tomorrow is a microneedle/scalp rejuvenation appt and I’m not looking forward to that but it needs to get redone because this girl made sparse dots on my scalp that do need filling in.

  • @mrsconn23, I'm glad to hear you don't have to rush your job search.  Take some time to decompress and adjust.  But if you start going stir crazy in a week or two, there's also nothing wrong with starting your job search as soon as you want to!

I'm going to be snarky this morning.  The person I've been training is my "BEI".  Exactly like a BEC, except ice instead of crackers, lol.

I do have valid reasons for why he annoys me so much.  I'm not even talking about the 10-minute ice chewing sessions that happen multiple times a day, lol.  But I can also admit my annoyance is greater than it should be for the "offenses".

I am also usually the last person to judge what people eat/drink.  But ngl, I do have one exception that I can't help but quietly side-eye.  People who drink 200+g of simple sugars. Every day. WTF.  He drinks at least 4 cans of Coke every day.  Drinks it constantly.  And that's just at work.

It's SO BAD for you!  I don't understand why anyone would do this to themselves.  A couple Cokes a day.  Cool.  Once in awhile you down a 6-pack of Coke.  Cool.  But an everyday pattern.  Not cool.

This last part is said in a humorous tone and not at all a part of my annoyance with him.  Though definitely my annoyance with life in general.  He drinks more calories with just Coke than I eat in a day.  But he's thin as a rail, even though he's shorter than average for a guy.  Whereas I feel like I have to bend heaven and earth, while altering the laws of physics to lose weight, lmao.

  • I used to work with someone like that @short+sassy.  I was envious she was so thin and could eat fast food EVERY day for lunch.  But as my other coworker pointed out, thin doesn’t always = healthy.

I had a coworker years ago who ate more food than any other person I have ever seen, man or woman.  It was a big convenience store/gas station.  Her daily snack was the bigger snack-sized Doritos bag (2.75 oz).  She'd open the bag and then douse liquid cheese from our nacho area all over the chips.

She was about 95 lbs and I'm guessing 5'2"-5'3".  On the shorter side, but still.  Was underweight for her height.

There was a Pizza Hut across the street and we would occasionally place a group order.  I'd split a large pizza with 2-3 other people.  She would order a large pizza for herself and eat the whole thing over the next 1-2 hours.

I never had any side-eye to her.  A bit of jealousy!  But not even that much because she was also unhappy with her weight.

Ironically, we sometimes vented with each other about our weight issues.  I'd be frustrated because I couldn't LOSE weight no matter what I did.  She'd be frustrated because she couldn't GAIN weight no matter she did.  I suggested she get checked for hyperthyroidism, but that was all I had for advice.  She said she had been in the past and had normal levels.

I finally found a big, though not only, part of my answer last year.  I hope she has also.

  • I'm definitely in the 'you're in your 40s and weight goes on faster' zone.  When I was younger it was NOT as much an issue.  Thanks aging!

Remember when The Hut was good? You just put a ooey gooey personal pan pizza in my mind.  Like, when they used real cheese! Lol (what they use now can’t be real)

I was told I didn't have to come back and there was no need to say it twice.  I get paid through next week on my 'regular' cycle and then I start the severance clock. One of my work besties e-mailed me the severance policy, so I feel better seeing it in writing now since it's been crickets from HR.
That's just so shitty to not even give you any real notice after that many years.

I was technically laid off last fall, but they gave me 3 months notice and I found a lateral move in the interim. It's never fun regardless, but it seems a lot kinder to give people time. Obviously people want to collect contacts for network/references, but from a business perspective they should want you to pass off work so the rest of the team isn't scrambling. Although the latter is fully not your problem. I'm glad you had the foresight to send yourself stuff ahead of time.
  • I have been gone for a while, and wanted to come back and let you all know I've been thinking of my Knotty friends.  And it sounds like you are having a rough go of it, @mrsconn23.  I was devastated when they dissolved my position when I worked in a publishing company.  They gave me severance for about 6 months, and I was going stir crazy.  I can't believe HR just went silent on you - that's awful.  I'm glad someone was able to let you know more about the severance so you could at least have piece of mind.  For people who are supposed to help workers, HR really can be absolute jerks.
