Wedding Woes

If this is a big problem, you have a charmed life, LW.

Dear Prudence,

A while back, I was a fan of a creator who made some decently popular works, but who isn’t a household name. Since then, this creator has since been accused of some serious things, including sexual assault. No criminal charges or lawsuits have occurred, but the evidence/this person’s own statements seem to indicate they’re probably guilty. I am in the middle of a deep clean of my house and will be donating some old clothes. While cleaning, I found some T-shirts I’d bought promoting this person’s work. I don’t want to keep them, but the question is: Should I donate them or throw them out? On the one hand, they’d be going to someone in need. On the other, having someone wear it might be an unwitting advertisement for this person and their work. I am admittedly leaning toward just donating them, but wondered if there’s something unethical about giving someone clothing that promotes an abuser (especially if the person getting the donation might not be aware of it).

  • This is your question?

    1) I don't think you're practicing great ethics if you basically push off something that is promoting a person of dubious practice onto someone else.

    2) Have you not heard of other uses for old t shirts?  Rags?  Clean with them?
  • Use them as rags.
  • OMG just throw them away or use them as rags. Or donate to an animal shelter/group as bedding for rescues. Jesus I want a life where this is my biggest source of distress.

  • People in need are not suffering from a lack of merch t-shirts. There is already enough clothing on the planet. No one wants this. Just use them as rags.

It's easy to make fun of this, but we are in an age where a lot of our favorite artists are coming up as assholes and we have to decide what to do with them.  What if they're Harry Potter shirts and LW is not really wanting to have anything out there that would make a transperson feel unsafe?  I'm struggling b/c I'm PISSED at George Clooney right now and the new movie with him and Brad Pitt is right up my alley and I'm not supporting him and so not watching it, but it sucks.  I had just purchased a Neil Gaman spoke word album that I truly loved, but after the sexual assault/abuse allegations, can't listen to and am not sure what to do with it, as well as what about the 2nd season of Sandman?  Do I just completely boycott it when the work itself was important to me and any boycott will affect the livelihood of hundreds of people (same with Good Omens)?

I'd cut them into shreds and toss them, myself  Maybe even burn them in the sink for a cleansing ritual for myself.
