She may need time.

Dear Prudence,

What do I do about my best friend? We worked together, were at each other’s houses all the time, and went out together. I ended up drinking at night to combat crippling anxiety. She helped me through all of it. I went to rehab and wrote her but when I came home, she just stopped all contact. I helped her through her divorce, then my husband filed a divorce from me. I reached out to her and heard nothing. Should I just give up?

Re: She may need time.

  • I feel like we are missing an important piece.  When drinking, was the LW a horrible friend to her BFF?  Lash out and say mean things?

The letter has no words of surprise like "I don't know what happened".  I think the LW knows why her friend stopped communicating and didn't want to admit it.

If she hasn't already said these next things, I think she should send one last communication.  Include missing the friendship.  Admit any mistakes she made in the relationship.  That her door is always open if the friend wants to get in touch.
