Bed Bugs- help!

Hi all.

My wedding is 3 weeks away and I just had a guest inform me that they have bed bugs. From my knowledge, it takes several months to get rid of them from your house and they can be transported on clothes. We have a lot of people traveling in and some elderly that live in nursing homes. Am I out of line for asking this guest not to attend our wedding anymore?

  • Hi all.

My wedding is 3 weeks away and I just had a guest inform me that they have bed bugs. From my knowledge, it takes several months to get rid of them from your house and they can be transported on clothes. We have a lot of people traveling in and some elderly that live in nursing homes. Yes.

Do you know how common they are??  Your wedding is 3 weeks away.  Talk to the guest and express your desire for their well being and confirm that they're addressing the issue.

If they're addressing it I think you need to trust that they're being smart just as you are likely not covid testing all your guests despite the number of guests in nursing homes.
  • Your guest has plenty of time to address the problem. It's not like they're going to procrastinate. Nobody wants bed bugs. And even if they happen to have them on their luggage or clothing, they are unlikely to pass them along to wedding guests.

I would be concerned, too, because I have a phobia about bedbugs, but I would just let this guest handle their own problem.
  • The reality is if you've ever traveled, if you go to the theater, or sit on a bus or a train, you are just as (and probably) more likely to encounter bed bugs. The people in the nursing homes are even more high risk to encounter them. So this isn't fair to the guest. Bed bugs don't typically hang out ON people. They spread mostly through contaminated luggage or furniture. I get it, trust me. Bed bugs freak me out. I check every hotel we stay at with by pulling up the sheets and checking seams and I'll even take a blow dryer to the mattress crevices in high risk areas (like big cities) to imitate warmth (which is what draws them out to feed). If your guest told you, I'm guessing they're also panicking and area doing everything they can to work on their home.
