@levioosa all the vibes your way, I know you were dreading today at work to begin with, but I hope that your grandparents are doing okay in their hotel room and that the rest of you family is out of harm's way.  My father's oldest brother and his family live in Pacific Palisades, they lost their home but are safe.  Extremely sad and scary and I can't believe we have someone coming into office who denies climate change.

The wind here has been insane.  It's been so loud that it's been waking me up overnight these last few days.  But then my middle sister who's an engineer and has a weekly meeting on the 82nd floor of the Empire State building sent me a video of the sound of the wind from up above.  Whoa.  So I hope that everyone dealing with all the weather things (extreme cold too...I don't mind the 30s but the real feels in single digits here have been a bit much!) is okay!
  • I know we've had MUCH stronger wind than this but I'd nope the F out of a visit to the Empire State Building today.

@levioosa please check in when you can.  It's frightening to see the images I can only imagine what you and your family are enduring.

I have a mid day visit to the gyno.  I don't love these appointments so I'm hoping all is uneventful.
  • It is also cold and windy here. We had a rough morning, M just couldn’t get going- it was a massive struggle to get shoes, jackets, and get out the door. I always feel bad when I just have to pick him up and go. Ugh.

Work is busy. I announced an org change and now have to talk through all of it with my folks. They’ve been through a lot of change but I’m frustrated with the “there’s so much change it’s so chaotic it’s so hard I don’t want to do it”. Like your job isn’t changing that much, and this is part of what your responsibilities are. I obviously don’t say that but want to.
  • Thinking of you @levioosa
  • Firedumpster for sure @levioosa. I can’f even imagine living in that area.  And to the brave firefighters. Bless them!
@charlotte989875, you can sat that to them. Lol.  Such is life!

SSDD. I ran out of english muffins so grabbed a brekkie sandwich from McDonald’s this morning.  Holy moly can you taste the quality of a homemade McMuffin vs. theirs. Do they even toast the english muffin? I must remember to restock after work before I get home and all comfy and in for the night.

  • @levioosa Man, I just want to swope in and do something for you.  I'm sorry your family is being such pills.  Seriously, you can't go back home, it's on fire, the people in charge here need to realize that.  I've had to deal with dementia and it's difficult enough without adding a crisis to it.  So far, everyone I know in CA is okay, nearly everyone has been under an evacuation order.  My friend in Sacramento said that it is affecting their air quality too, though not as bad as previous years...yet.

We're supposed to get snow this evening.  I'm over it, but I know it's not as much in surrounding areas, and I WFH, so I'm trying not to be bitter about it but I'm already over winter.

I'm very seriously considering renting one of the party rooms at the movie theatre for my birthday.  It's only $25/hour.  I'm considering bringing 2 favorite movies.  It's only 11-12 people, so I think it'd be fun.  They still serve you the entire menu and you can even game in there.  I kinda want to rent one to play Mario Kart on, it's like a 150" projection TV and that would be a BLAST.

Otherwise, SSDD.  I'm ready for Friday.  My left arm/shoulder is feeling better today, still a little achy, but not what it was yesterday.

  • Thanks @VarunaTT. That sounds so cool for your birthday! I would love to do that here and watch LOTR or the Matrix or something, but I feel like somehow it would be like $500.

  • @levioosa there are other options that are more expensive that are "rent the actual theatre, pay per person, and movie viewing expense", but the small room has a blu-ray player and hook ups for gaming systems, so I might just bring in my own copies.  I think it'd actually be more fun.  I've been in these rooms to help prep a drag show (I miss the drag life sometimes, we had some wild experiences) and they're basically really big and well designed media rooms, rather than an actual movie theatre.
  • @levioosa it sucks that you have to do it by default, but also so glad that your grandparents have you.

SSDD here. Work is busy, norovirus is going to around school so just waiting for that to hit, H is being an *ss, kids are great. WFH tomorrow and hoping to get some errands done in the afternoon.

    I'll post prudie shortly.
  • I have 2 friends whose daughters and their families live in the area of the fires. One has evacuated to Vegas to stay with her H's family. The other hasn't left yet - I told my friend I hope she told her to get the F out. DD has a good friend who lost their home - they had only been in it a couple of weeks. I remember DD telling me they had found a house. So sad. I hope everyone else's families stay safe. @levioosa, your grandparents are lucky to have you even if they don't appreciate it at the moment.
  • It's breaking my heart to see all the devastation some LA areas are going through.  All the homes and businesses lost with thousands of people affected.  Then tragedies like this also bring out the sociopathic internet trolls who make me lose my faith in humanity a little.  If you can't be sympathetic to people watching their home and neighborhood being destroyed, then put your mouse down and STFU.

@ei34, I'm so sorry your uncle and his family lost their home, but glad to hear they are safe.

@levioosa, I was thinking of you yesterday.  I'm sorry to hear about your grandparents and that nobody else in the family is stepping up.  If there are family members not working but are nearby, they should be spending time with your grandparents to keep them distracted and keep insisting they can't leave.  My prayers with you all.

  • oh no @levioosa, i'm so sorry. Sending safe vibes/thoughts/everything for your family.
  • I'm finally getting back and caught up. It looks like it was a fun, healthy holiday for everyone, but now the world is a sack of shit. I'm so sorry @levioosa, about your grandpa. I know it's at least partially driven by dementia, but it doesn't make it any easier to not want to throttle him. Hopefully he'll come to his senses and quickly rejoin grandma.

It's apparently going to snow here tomorrow. Everyone is acting like it's going to be a huge disaster. If one more person tells me about how they spent snowpocalypse '14 today, I'm going to lose my shit. Buy some damned milk and stay home for 24 hours. It's going to be fine.

Clearly my 2 week break did nothing to fix me. Maybe I do need some hormones.
...as I now complain about 2014, lol...

It didn't snow here, but everything was iced over for three days straight.  OMG, the company I work for were huge AHs about it.  The governor, the mayor, everybody were telling people to stay home because the roads were too dangerous.  Bridges were also closed, which NOLA is surrounded by.  I'd guess it was impossible to get to the office for a good 20-30% of employees.  I've even heard rumors that they annually budge in three "excused" days for weather, though more meant for hurricanes

This is what they told us.  "We understand if you are not able to come to work.  But the office will be open so please use vacation or AWOP for any missed time."

Some weather levity I stole from another Knottie at some point in time.  Though I disagree for the most southern South.  Schools are closed and stores emptied for just flurries and a state of emergency is declared far sooner than 8":

Ugh im so sorry @levioosa, that’s so frustrating about your grandfather (and of course your entire family / your H’s attitude). The worst!!

Lol @short+sassy the main takeaway I get from that is the accuracy of traffic doubling or tripling if there are three snowflakes (or raindrops, etc)

Ughhhhh, grandpa went back home. I cannot with him. He is so frriggen difficult. Looks like we got Grandma to stay at the hotel though. If the fires don't get her, literally the air quality could kill her. Her COPD is so bad she can't breathe on normal days and she doesn't have a prescription for oxygen (also something you probably don't want around flying embers regardless). This is so frustrating and I'm also extra annoyed because how many people right now would love to have the privilege of a place to stay, people to help them with their clothes, supplies, meds, and my then my Grandfather is just being an ass.
Ugh!  Yes, the air quality can be dangerous and an issue for some people.  I hope your Grandma does okay with that.  And especially that your Grandpa will be okay!

My mom has a lot of respiratory problems.  I checked in with her.  Thankfully, the ash and smoke hasn't come down her way.  But high winds also aggravate her issues.  She said it has been extremely windy, so she hasn't been leaving the house.

Alas, she used my "how are you feeling" text to bitch about Gov. Newsome cutting the fire management budget and Mayor Bass cutting LA's fire department budget, while "millions go to illegal immigrants" (sigh).  She was a Democrat and left leaning when I was growing up.  It's frustrating to see her go further right with each passing year and now she's fully entrenched on the far right crazy side.

Also LOL because we just passed Prop 4 for wildfire prevention. I don't doubt that there is mismanagement somewhere down the line (it is the government, after all), but when you have a bunch of climate change deniers who constantly work against environmental protections, then of course natural disasters are going to become catastrophic.

There has been a lot of problem getting fast help because of the winds which grounded a bunch of the usual air assistance. It's been a mess. =(

For 36+ inches, I can oddly relate to both the South and the Midwest!

It would only be mice, rats, and nutria left here.  The smarter ones would figure out how to take over my employer's company.  Snow day for all the other small mammals!  But not for the ones in my building.  It's still a work day, lmao.

I also like "complete societal breakdown" vs. "yoga classes cancelled".

In defense of the south, it is the ice, not snow, that screws us. We did get like 6 inches here a couple of years ago and it was totally fine because there wasn't an inch of ice on the roads below it.

But also, pretty much everyone I know is WFH or has a job that gets cancelled in bad weather. We'll all be stuck at home tomorrow, but everything will melt when it's 45 degrees on Saturday. There is 0 reason to be freaking out this much.
  • @MyNameIsNot, Agree!  Snow is a lot better than ice and not as slippery.

I was so mad at Mother Nature that year.  "Why are you making it so cold, but no snow?"  At least snow is fun when it is only once in a blue moon.  We rarely drop below freezing for more than a few hours, but that was three solid days of opportunity for nothing.  No one was predicting snow because the other conditions weren't right.  I was just hopeful, lol.
