Prudie Day

Happy almost Friday.  How's everyone today?

Re: Prudie Day

  • Busy-ish day with a need to take Chiquito to the dentist.  I've had to move this appointment so many times due to his schedule so now let's do it!

I told DH that I didn't care how dinner tomorrow gets made but I don't want to make it.  He understood so that's at least one less thing.   I loathe the idea of going out to eat for Valentine's Day and having that on a Friday night seems worse.  He usually cooks but I felt the need this week to set the expectation that it is not on my to do list.

  • It's been cold and rainy here all week and I think it's ruining my mood. I just don't want to do any of the things I should be doing. So instead I'm doom scrolling and trying to figure out what is actually happening and what is exaggerations and panic.

My work monitor broke the other day and I got to order a larger new one. I'm irrationally excited about it. My world is boring today.
  • I had my post all typed out and somehow forgot to hit post, so it was late.  It's deleted now.

I'm sleepy this morning.  I've started a rewatch of Babylon 5 and some of my favorite episodes were lining up.  I stayed up too late and finally made myself turn it off and go to bed.  All of the snow here is gone, but it's still pretty bold.  I also realized that hey, I WFH and am not required to work from my home location.  So, I'm taking my work computer with me and if I get stuck OOT, it'll be fine.  Now just waiting for the news to get there.

Otherwise, it's kind of a SSDD situation.  Nothing too much going on really.
  • It's super cold here (-8 this morning) and we got about an inch of fine snow yesterday so the roads are slippery.  I'm very thankful to be WFH so I don't need to spend time outside.

DH woke up in a grumpy mood today so we'll see if it persists.  A friend will be visiting with him this afternoon so that usually helps.

There is some work drama but I think we're getting past that.  It only takes one dysfunctional person to muck things up.

I need to spend some time organizing and purging in the garage but that won't happen until the temps get back to the 20s.  The garage is attached and the ceiling is insulated but it's still cold out there.

Tomorrow DH has an appointment with his PCP and then we'll probably order in for dinner.  Nothing big planned.  My birthday is next week so we are having family over to celebrate.

@VarunaTT - I'm glad you have a plan that still allows you to go OOT, even if you get stuck there.

@MyNameIsNot - yay for a new monitor!  My work laptop is up for refresh and a new one is being sent.  I'm excited but also dreading the transition.

  • I just got out of a "meeting".  I was only three minutes late and got there just in time to hear, "Anyone have anything else? (a few moments of silence).  Okay.  Thanks everyone, have a good day."  LMAO.

I don't want to jinx myself, but I only have a few things to do at work today and they shouldn't take long.

Little bit of TMI.  I had the craziest period this month, though in a good way.  It was almost exactly 24 hours long.  That's it.  No spotting before or after either.  Started Monday evening.  Was a "normal heavy" day on Tuesday, but was lessening by the evening.  Didn't have even one drop of blood Wednesday morning or since.

I don't think I have ever had a period that short.  Overall, perimenopause really sucks.  But there are occasional benefits, lol.  I'm still probably a little too young for it to disappear completely, but I keep hoping!  Though my friend, who's about a year younger than me, hasn't had a period in 8 months but according to her lab work she is still in peri and not yet the full deal.  Fingers X'ed.

  • Are you even a working adult if getting a new monitor or desk chair doesn't thrill you? lol. I was stoked about getting a new calendar the other day.

Super rainy here today. I passed two bad accidents on the way to work already. I was able to get here a little early so I did 40 minutes on the treadmill and hopefully later today I can walk a little more and then head to the gym tonight. Otherwise, SSDD.

    Safe travels! @VarunaTT

I hope everyone who is ill is recovering quickly!

    Stay warm everyone!

  • @VarunaTT, I have a friend who half WFHs and half goes out on location to offices in Louisiana and surrounding states.  She has an aunt in AL she visits a few times a year.  She'll purposely schedule the visits during her WFH week and will then take the train to get there.  She has almost no downtime taking the train vs. an airplane and finds it a lot more comfortable.  She doesn't have to take vacation time for her "traveling" days.  It's also close enough she departs/arrives on the same day.

@MyNameIsNot, I'd be really excited about that also!  Big monitors are the best.  When I WFH, I get stuck using a tiny laptop screen for one of my monitors.  I spent my own money to get a second monitor and made sure it was good-sized.  After I move to my next permanent place and if I have a hybrid or remote position, I will spring for a better WFH office and that will include two large monitors even if I have to buy them myself.

  • Speaking of being a grown up, DH picked up a stainless steel kitchen trash can for the kitchen and I'm STILL super excited about it.

Also, ways to show you're a middle aged parent: DH's CPAP was having issues making a good seal the other night so it started to sound like a whine.  I woke up in the middle of the night scared that one of the kids was crying in bed to realize it was not a child but my husband's inability to sleep.

I can relate to the trash can, lol.

When I was under contract for my house, my office was getting rid of a nice stainless steel trash can because the foot pedal to open the top wasn't working anymore.  They were going to throw it out when the replacement came.  I said, "No, no!  I want it."  Sticker shock those things were 70 bucks.

Yay!  Better and free trash can for my new house.

About 5 years later, my next door tenants crashed and burned financially.  They at least moved out within about 10 days after they couldn't pay the rent, so I didn't have to evict them.  But they left a MESS.  Including abandoning 98% of their stuff.

But one of the things they left behind was a slightly bigger, stainless steel trash can.  Where the foot pedal DID work, lol.  Free* trash can upgrade!

*"Free" is a strong word, lol.  My H and I spent two, solid days hauling almost all of their belongings to the curb.  We kept and sold a few things, but the damage and lost rent still exceeded their security deposit by over a grand.

  • The cost of the things was dissuading DH for years.  But I've wanted one since we were newlyweds!  And the other cans were so gross and our recent one was only a few years old and we were already at the phase of a working foot pedal but the lid would fly off!
  • FWIW, I got the simple human stainless one as a registry gift. We've been married going on 16 years and it's still fine.

The sticker shock is there, but those things last!
  • Our really nice SimplyHuman stainless steel trashcan foot pedal broke two years ago. We tried to repair it but it was a plastic component not a metal one we could fix. It's been two years and I'm still sad about it. I bought a cheap replacement one from Amazon and it's just not the same.

  • I know I'm preaching to the choir.  And I realize none of us will find this shocking, but it's still upsetting.

They are looking to slash 260B off the USDA's budget.  It's typically around 340B, a "whopping" 3.15% of the total US budget.  SNAP (food assistance) is 68% of the USDA's budget and the first target.  The majority of SNAP recipients are children and senior citizens.

Kailee Buller is the new appointed chief of staff for the USDA.  She said previous department's officials "put politics over commonsense".

Ma'am.  Consider the man who appointed you and the administration you work under before you have the gall to throw around phrases like that.

Let's review the double-edged sword.  Grocery prices are already rising because of Trump's tariffs that don't make any sense.  And will probably get exponentially worse as his crackdown on illegal immigration starts affecting the farming and meat industries.

Clearly the perfect time to slash SNAP benefits.  Making the most disadvantaged among us even more food insecure.  Time for great grandma to get back to work and those lazy kids back into the coal mines /s.

  • I had always wanted one of those nice stainless steel as well.  ExH would never agree b/c of the price.  When I moved into my own place, I bought one for myself and almost 10 years later, I still love it.
  • @VarunaTT I've started singing a little jingle every morning when I get up. "what new constitutional crisis will we have todayyyyyy"
