Wedding Woes

own up to it and apologize

Dear Prudence,

My brother was eavesdropping on my mother and me. He overheard some hurtful but true things about him. Now he has repeated those things back to me and is very angry and upset. What should I do? This was a private conversation with my mom.

Re: own up to it and apologize

  • It may be a private conversation, but it's still shitty to talk about him behind his back. Apologize and stop acting like you have the moral high ground here.
  • How about you address your issues with him TO HIM?
  • Apologize for talking to her about him instead of talking to him directly. You were in the wrong, so own up to it.
  • You hear that? That song in the distance? That’s the sound of you facing the music, LW

Apologize for talking behind his back, instead of to him.  Are these hurtful but true things things that he can work on and change?  He won't have the chance if he doesn't know.  (And if you have already told him several times and he just won't change, I think a vent session is allowed, but be careful about it.  I would still apologize for upsetting him.)
