Dear Prudence, 

My ex-boyfriend’s birthday is coming up in a few days. Should I send him a card? I would give anything to reconnect with him, but it has been a year since we broke up. Our circumstances were chaotic at the time (I was sick/his life was in shambles last we spoke), and he just needed space. I guess if I simply wanted to wish him a good day, sure; but I am hoping for this to be the crack in the door to get us communicating again. What do you think?

    You are not together anymore.

    If you want to reach out , do it.  But IMO you're likely not together for a reason.

    Feels weird to me to use the birthday as an excuse to try and reconnect. Wish him happy birthday if you want and try to reconnect if you want, but this feels kind of underhanded and i imagine he will see through it? Maybe he wont' care, but i think it would come off oddly.
