Molten Hot Monday

And I know it's not even as bad here as some other parts of the country.  Stay cool and hydrated everyone!

It was a nice weekend.  Seven hours at the town pool on Saturday and six hours at my parents' pool yesterday.  I managed to get the cleaning in, and did a bit more prep cooking than usual yesterday early morning before the heat really picked up, so this week's dinners will be lots of quick reheating  vs. turning on the oven or stove (we don't have AC in the kitchen) for a full meal.

There was a touch of Monday morning grumbling earlier today, but I was happy to remind the kids that this is the last Monday, which helped.

  • Happy Monday!  I keep forgetting you're still in school @ei34 but am reminded this is why we opted not to do the UC camp for Chiquita later this summer because it's likely based on the NY students who enter school so late (they have a bus from Long Island to the camp) and that week is when it's the first week of soccer practices.

Soccer camp started today for Chiquita and they called it 15 min early (was supposed to be from 7-9:30 when one girl already started showing signs of heat stroke.

Chiquito is at his day camp til 1 and I sent him with two giant containers of water.  I'm hoping he does OK!  Luckily the counselors know to get the kids water breaks and go in the shade.  The teenagers don't want to feel crappy either.

Stayed low this weekend and Saturday I cleaned house while the family watched the Yankee game.  Sunday was Mass and then I cleaned out my closets.  I took the approach of taking stuff out if I haven't worn the items in years and if they're also beyond repair (I'm talking to YOU white shirts and dresses with yellow pits) and tossed.  There are 5 bags of items and sweaters off to donation bags.

DH remains feeling funky.  He's cautious and last night at least got more sleep than previous (sucks when you wake up at 5:45 on a Sunday!) and it's hard.  I'm continuing to hope that there are answers because I hate seeing him just not know what makes him feel off.
  • Monday’s are bad but this is the last school Monday for you all so yay! @ei34
@banana468, I hope H feels more himself soon.

Most of our office is going on vaca, so I think the next 2 weeks have a lot of wfh days from what I’m hearing. I have a paranormal conference this Friday and I’m thinking of signing up for another in September if I know some people going. Or maybe I’ll just go regardless? This is how you meet people.
Don’t you hate when you book a hotel room and in your mind you put it on the cc and got it out of the way when you booked it but then you get a reminder email saying that you owe the entire amount? D’oh. Thought I pre paid that.  Oh well. There’s things I don’t mind staying in debt for and travel and experiences is one of them.

  • It’s sweltering here. We have someone coming to install AC, but not until next week and I’m going to melt before then (okay I’m dramatic, we have window units but they’re just not enough).

Weekend was good, hot but fun. I’m interviewing candidates for an opening on my team all day. It’s great- but exhausting. Hoping I can make a hire after today!
  • We got home yesterday. The drive from the beach to DS2's house took over 13 hours - should have taken less than 12. H was exhausted so we decided to stay in Dayton. We got up yesterday, had breakfast and hit the road. The vacation was great. The boys are at such a great age. They just want to go to the beach and go to the pool. I'm perfectly ok with that. There was very little squabbling or melting down. Always a plus. The weather was very nice. Not nearly as humid as usual - again perfectly fine. Temps were in high 80s low 90s so not as horrible as it could be. I've been down there when it is over 100.

Today I had orthopedic PT and now am getting ready to head out to the dentist. I need to do some laundry and clean house this week. The cleaning will depend on my hip/back. It is still not going well.

Happy last week of school @ei34!

Yay for last week of school! @ei34

good vibes for big kid bed transitions! @charlotte989875

Sending you guys hugs @banana468. Hopefully the rheumatologist has some answers. If not it might be worth seeing an endocrinologist if he hasn’t already. Not having answers is the worst.

I am on the struggle bus. Last week was a lot. H and I got into a pretty decent argument. I think we’re both just over tired and individually feel misunderstood. There’s been a lot of family stuff happening too and I am just so drained with it all. Yesterday we had a whole situation with the grandparents and I wanted to scream because after telling me they (other family) couldn’t do anything to help, I fixed the issue but in the meantime people didn’t communicate that they actually could help and then made the situation worse for everyone. And then my aunt canceled something this morning that shouldn’t have been canceled, called me freaking out because her plan that deviated from mine wasn’t happening, and then I had to scramble to fix that. Just so frustrating. I was so stressed out yesterday that I slept like three hours figuring at least I could sleep in, but nope, they called me at 7:30 because they can’t just listen.

Anyways, I’m feeling bitter and drained about a lot of things. Politics is really destroying my mental health as well and I can’t figure out the line of being informed vs trying to protect my mental health. And I don’t know that it’s even right to shut some of it out as a privileged white woman. We are having ICE raids everywhere. They were trying to force their way into the local hospital yesterday. And I’m hearing from reasonable sources that our hospitals are rapidly hiring for trauma preparation so that’s fun too.

@varunaTT Harley and Aurora look so similar! Aurora has never gotten bigger than 6-6.5 lbs and the petiteness kills me. Here’s a pic of her and our other cat (who, to be fair, is huge at 20 lbs).

  • Thanks @levioosa for the recommendation.  MIL tried to refer DH to go to her functional medicine doctor that she sees 1x/mo where she pays in cash and doesn't tell FIL about what he does.

And....DH has said despite MIL talking about him to her doctor he has zero plans to make an appointment with someone going in that direction.

@banana468 I did see a functional medicine doctor for awhile when I was down and desperate and she did help, the caveat though is that she was more “medically” centered and had gone to Berkeley and Baylor and had done residencies in our local trauma center and USC’s Women’s Health…so like…probably not the average “Functional Medicine” doctor for sure. Back in my past life (aka conservative homeschooled days) I also was dragged to super alternative practitioners, some of whom also called themselves “functional medicine” and those were for sure a crock. Sometimes they helped symptoms but they never figured out what was wrong and they were so much money. A loooot of cultural appropriation in those spaces too.

  • I do think MIL's doctor is a real doctor.  But they seem to specialize in athletes and people who will pay more?  I'm not sure why she doe this in a cloud of secrecy either especially when as a 73 yo woman who takes a lot of medication, there's plenty that can be conflicting with the drawer of supplements.

  • Ah Monday.  It was hot and humid all weekend.  Friday night, my Mom and I met a friend and her mom for dinner.  It was noisy but fun.  Saturday, we planned to stay in and hibernate.  DH's niece texted that they were coming to town and asked if we would like to meet at a local pizza place for her DH's birthday.  My DH was up for it, so we went downtown to meet them.  As I got DH's scooter out of the car, I lost my balance and did a face-plant on the pavement next to the car.  It was like sloooowww motion.  I hit my chin, bottom lip, nose and scratched up both glasses' lenses.  I lay there for a few seconds, and then DH realized I wasn't at the back of the car.  He opens his door, and I'm lying there - he was so shocked.  I got up, finished putting together the scooter and entered the restaurant.  Thankfully, I wasn't bleeding, and nothing felt broken.  I've got a big bruise on my chin and road rash on my lips and nose.  Scuffed up my glasses.  My hands are super stiff and sore.  I'm still finding bruises.  Sheesh.

On Sunday, we did recliner church and I crafted and did laundry.

We're having storms today on and off.  I need to take my glasses to the optical shop to get the lenses fixed.  Fortunately, I have an old pair that is still usable.

My BFF saw a functional medicine doctor for a while. After doing an elimination diet, she saw some improvement in her symptoms and inflammation. She also lost quite a bit of weight. Her husband pushed her toward it as he had gone, and she felt much better. She was skeptical but did see some improvement.

  • You need a break or some good news thrown your way @levioosa. Your cats are adorbs too!
@MNNEBride ouch! So sorry that happened. I’ve been there a time or two. Glad it was nothing serious.

  • Loving all the kitties today!

Weekend was good. H and I took a short backpacking trip up in the mountains. It was really good to get away and be disconnected for 48 hours. But we took the dog and I don't think I'm doing that again in the summer. I cannot count the number of ticks I pulled off her Saturday night. (She's treated, but they try it anyway.) Luckily it was a bit cooler up there and not so humid. I don't think I could have handled doing that in 95 degrees.

Nothing much exciting here. It's hot as shit and I don't feel like cooking. H dropped my car for an oil change this morning, so I'm thinking of grabbing take-out on the way home from picking it up.
  • @MNNEBride, glad you are ok after your fall!

@MNNEBride That sounds terrible!  I'm glad you're okay so far.

@levioosa Your Aurora is adorable and even smaller than Harley!  Harley is 8 pounds.  The vet had to get out the kitten needles for her shots, which I think made things more painful.  I also think the Nextguard made her sick -- the dose is for 5-15 pounds which seems like a wild weight range.  I'm going to start giving her a half dose every 2 weeks to see if that helps keep her safe but also not so sick.  I have to admit that having a smaller cat is a lot easier, but sometimes I do wish she was bigger so I didn't have to worry quite so much about things.  She is leashed and with me when outside, but I still worry about bigger animals trying to take her from me.  I might end up getting her some of the vests with spikes on it...safety and punk?  I love it.  :)

Mom and I are struggling with each other.  IDK how well this is going to work out, but I'm trying not to get down about it.  It's worse b/c work is just stressful AF with this new program.  Basically, it's barely working and they just keep adding workarounds for things.  But that's not sustainable in terms of time AND completely relying on my memory -- THAT'S WHAT THE PROGRAM IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR.  Today they added another one responsibility/work around and I'm just over it.
  • @VarunaTT, Oddly enough, I had something similar happen to me and can commiserate with Harley, lol.

I get my blood drawn 2-4x/year and also donate blood 1-2x/year, so this is not an unfamiliar process for me.  It's a little uncomfortable, but it's NBD because the blood draws only take a few minutes.

But I had one once that was taking a LONG time.  After the phlebotomist was done, I mentioned in a light/curious tone that it had taken longer than normal. And also said I wondered if my doctor had ordered more tests than usual (I knew he hadn't).  But that opened the door for her to tell me she'd had trouble finding my vein, so she'd used a pediatric needle instead.  Ugh!  I'd guess it took 3x longer and was noticeably more uncomfortable.

@VarunaTT omg Aurora did awful with the NextGuard. She got so so sick I never did it again and I just switched to Advantage since she’s an indoor kitty and the chances of her getting a tick are close to zero.

In fact, it's so hot in my city today, 37 degrees Celsius, that I'm not leaving the house. Actually, I love summer, but when it's too hot, I feel bad. According to my friend from Pharmacy B2B, it is important to be careful with the sun in summer. Never forget to apply sunscreen and, most importantly, stay well hydrated.
