The summer counseling position is K-12, and I’m loving the little kids.  Not in a career change way, I’m content with the 8-12th grade crew for the school year. But the littles are really nice to work with too.

Younger DD has a friend over right now so I’m trying to balance her alone time with her pal / letting the other two (who are acting like they’ve never seen another kid before) join in the fun.

Mom’s birthday celebration yesterday was great. My brother and middle sister catered Greek food, which we all agree we don’t eat often (in spite of there being many tasty Greek restaurants in the area) but when we do we love it.

Work is going okay.  I think the time off really helped, I'm not nearly so frustrated and can make myself breathe and work through it rather than just tapping out.

There's not a lot going on right now.  I've been reading a lot.  We had the new internet come in yesterday, so I've been catching up on shows I've missed.  I don't think they've ported the landline phone number yet.  Never mind that there's 2 other phones in this house, Mom is freaking over the landline.  She also freaked out b/c she gets the informed mail notifications and saw one from Thriftbooks.  I found her on the phone with the post office, getting upset, asked what it was about and she told me.  **I** ordered from Thriftbooks, you have someone else living here.  Some days I can shrug it off, but other times seeing the results of her aging is just hurtful.  The lack of just simple logic and memory is hard to deal with and see.

Apparently my mother has told the other side of the family that I've moved in.  It means they're all complaining in the background.  I was just like, Mom, this is who they are, they've always resented you taking care of me as a kid who had no one else, and this is just a continuation (not even escalation) of their behavior before.  It's like Mom can see it for what it is, but not let go of it.  I'm like, I don't give AF about them and their nasty lives anymore, let them rot in the beds they made.

I’m glad you’re enjoying the new gig! @ei34.

@VarunaTT I’m glad you’re feeling more rested. And what is it with the old folks and landlines. It was a huge fight with my grandparents ten years ago. They absolutely demanded not only having a land line, but several ports with corded lines in the house. Grandpa did work for the phone company so I kind of understand, but still. I do find it a little funny that I’m probably part of a small minority for my age group that can actually use a rotary phone.

Work today. Not too much else to report. I am feeling a little guilty because it’s been a few weeks since we’ve been at my grandparents but it’s BIL’s bday this weekend so visiting them will have to wait.

  • @ei34, That does sound neat to work with some kids from different age groups for the summer!

Where is everyone today, lol?  I mean this board.  But the roads and even my work's parking lot were emptier than usual.  I assumed if people were tacking on vacation time to 4th of July, they would have done it last week.  But maybe a lot of people chose this week.

It's a few days past 4th of July, but I took a vacation day on Thursday to turn it into a 4-day weekend.  It felt pretty gratuitous since I had just come back from vacation and only worked the M-W between them.  But since my Fridays are half-days, my half-day had moved to Thursday so for only 5 more vacation hours, I could get a 4-dayer.

My friend and I went to a fun event on the 4th.  It was a last minute "kiddie pool" party that a bar had thrown together.  They are catty corner from a baseball field.  People brought their kiddie pools and set them up in the field, which also had a hose to fill them up.

Unfortunately, it was not well attended, but my friend and I had a great time!  Same one who is my neighbor and that I went to Catalina with.  We had not realized the "magic" of kiddie pools, even for adults when you live in a ridiculously hot climate.  We were able to be outside for hours without feeling too hot because we were sitting in water.  We're planning to do more of this in our own backyards.  She sometimes does movie nights in her backyard and wants to have a kiddie pool party, while watching Jaws, lol.

  • Work is rough lately- there’s a budget squeeze, it’s impacting a lot of projects and hires and having to deliver that to my managers and their teams is tough. They have have valid & appropriate questions (no no one is getting fired, yes it means we can’t backfill open roles or have non essential travel) but I’m drained.

Maybe we can have Prudie Friday?
  • @charlotte989875 - We are going through similar issues at my job.  Uncertainty at work, in the nation and at home is very stressful. ::Hugs:: to you.

  • Sounds like a fun 4th @short+sassy, I actually know some adults who do like to float in a kiddie or smaller pool. I would - but sounds like a lot of effort to set it up. Lol. Did I mention how lazy I am?
@ILoveBeachMusic, good luck on the house hunt!

There are small pumps that will blow them up for you.  So the set up and tear down isn't too bad and doesn't take long.

I am really concerned about my long term job security too. I was already feeling stressed because of AI (I think I'm probably at the tail end of people who won't see the full impact before retirement, but it will be very, very close, and I might still be wrong), but now with our health care and STEM being decimated, I'm really really worried. I already get treated terribly from a healthcare conglomerate which is gobbling up all the private practices in the area. The new department I'm in is heavily funded by Medicaid. Soon (being within 3 years soon) I may not have options to leave for a better company (anticipate all corporations just running rampant with employee abuse and lack of adequate pay) and I may not have a job if they make cuts because we'll have lost a major part of our business. And I'm beyond heartbroken for my patients.

Anyways, on a lighter note, I tried out a new recipe the other night and it was fantastic. I'm for sure making it again. And I think baby Bok Choy sautéed in a mixture of shallots, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil and honey is my new favorite way to make a vegetable. I'll probably add some red chili flakes next time for an added kick. It's BIL A's bday tomorrow and we are planning to go see the new Jurassic Park movie and then hang out by the pool. It's been 102 F here the past few days but tomorrow should be a high of 89 so should be lovely for the pool. No real plans on Sunday. Would be fun to go out to brunch but SIL has a new position starting on Tuesday and wants to be completely bright eyed and rested and I can't blame her for that. Maybe H and I will go do something fun.

And for anyone who's interested, I'm on a trial journey with some supplements that are supposed to make you look tan without the sun exposure. We'll see how "tan" I get but I'm trialing it before out Vegas trip to see if I can get a glow without any sun exposure (and would love to skip a fake tan too if I could avoid it as it's a PITA). I could theoretically get the same benefit by eating a shit ton of bellpeppers, sweet potatoes, red onions, and other brightly colored fruits and veggies, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to eat enough to show the difference. I'm still trying to incorporate those foods too, of course. I'll let you know how it goes. My legs may not be toothpick sized but they are toothpick colored and I would love for that not to be the case.

  • @levioosa, I hope your career starts looking brighter.  Maybe if you and your job are able to hang in there through this administration, the Medicare and health care crisis will get better with the next one (please, please!).

Your veggie recipe sounds delicious!  Good luck with the supplement.  I'll be curious to hear what you think about it.

  • I'm frightened for the future of science in our country.

And as far as AI goes, I'm recently hit in my social media feed for tons of underwire garments for minimizing huge breasts.

And let me just tell you algorithm creators: You couldn't have missed the mark harder if you tried..
  • @levioosa, Let us know how the supplement test goes! I'm a casper and terrified of skin cancer, but I want to look glowy and tan.

Honestly I would settle to just not look sickly. lol. I can say that I have been taking a low dose of one of the supplements already within another supplement (Sunisdin, recommended by my derm) and even that has made me have a little more of a glow. My SIL is trying the Sorelle drops and we're going to compare. I chose mine because the Sorelle is predominantly beta carotene and it can give you a little bit of an unnatural orange color which, if I want that I'll just go get a bad spray tan.

When DS1 was a baby, his favorite baby foods were sweet potatoes and carrots. He ate so much of them he had an orange tint! So it might work, lol.

@ILoveBeachMusic when my cousin was a baby my aunt panicked and took him to the hospital once because he was orange. He was fine, it was from the shit ton of puréed baby carrots he’d been eating lol
