Clean it or wear slippers?

Dear Prudence,

My flatmate and I are engaged in a debate. She recently bought one of those pedestal mats—like a bathmat but for the toilet. The problem is I HATE it. I can’t get past the fact that we wouldn’t see anything get on there—it’s very dark in color—and I just know that realistically it’s not going to get washed often enough to be clean. I suppose perhaps it’s not any worse than a bathmat is, but a bathmat you need in case you slip! There’s no way a toilet rug is cleaner than the bare floor, right? I’m so uncomfortable with it I can’t use the toilet without shoes or slippers on. Her argument is that it means her feet don’t get cold from the tiles, and I think she believes she’ll wash it often enough that it’ll be the more hygienic option compared to the floor. Who’s right here? Is there such a thing as a shared bathroom veto power?

  • If you're both this high strung, you need to live alone or at least have separate bathrooms.

If you're both women (assuming yes), i don't understand how there's really any difference between the floor and the rug. Both need to be cleaned regularly and there shouldn't be "drippies" as my boys call it since you presumable are sitting down.

That's all I could think of too.
  • yeah - these are weird conversations.

Our bathrooms are tiny.  We hang the bathmat between showers and do not have a toilet mat.  FWIW, I would loathe it but I also live with kids including a nearly 11 yo boy and a child with UC.  It's...a lot.

That was my first thought too. Like...are you using a Shewee at home? You're both sitting I'm assuming? Then...like wash it once a week and that's probably more than enough?

This is so weird. I don’t have one of these, but my bathmat simply goes through the wash when the bathroom floor gets its weekly mopping.
