Wedding Woes

You suck

Dear Prudence,

My wife “Lydia” and I are hosting Easter for our families this year. Lydia’s brother “Drew” has celiac disease, and one pet peeve of mine is that in addition to making all the regular food, she also has to bust her ass making special dishes he can eat, which she does for every special occasion we host. She claims she doesn’t mind doing it so he can relax and not have to worry about what he’s eating. Isn’t it more reasonable to ask Drew to bring his own food rather than inconvenience my wife?

Re: You suck

  • "My brother in law has an autoimmune disease and I refuse to have an Easter dinner of meat and potatoes that would already accommodate most of his dietary restrictions.  I want him here but don't really want to actually deal with his dietary needs for this AI disease - which is not something he ever chose.  How can I make him do more work so I can get what I want without looking like a jerk??"

What exactly is the LW doing to host?  Maybe....HE can help do some of the cooking and look at ways that the meal can be GF?
  • I wouldn’t buy special bread or anything (bil can bring that but like banana said, meat, potatoes, rice, veggies…bil is probably used to that. Will there be dishes he can’t eat? Sure. Par for the course

This is for sure reading like “wahhh my wife is caring for someone else and this cooking time is distracting her from the more important things in life…ME.”

Maybe LW can make the rest of the meal and free up wife to focus on the brother's food, if he's so concerned about her overexerting herself?

    Right?

But I try to do the same.  My niece and SIL are GF.  Last year I catered Chiquita's Confirmation lunch and had a salmon and potato dish that were naturally GF and ordered the cake from a GF bakery.  I did it that way so there were already natural options.

Ham, potatoes and veggies are naturally GF and you can do things like make a pavlova that are also GF or even flourless chocolate cake.  So....LW is coming across as an oldfashioned man baby who refuses to what...give up pasta for Easter??
