Dear Prudence,

My wife and I live in a suburban neighborhood, and she has, of late, gotten an asinine (and I think potentially dangerous) idea into her head.

She wants to take up beekeeping in our backyard! There are lots of kids in the neighborhood, and the houses don’t have more than 15 or so feet between them. I think having a swarm of bees flying about the neighborhood is a safety risk. My wife is already fantasizing about producing her own honey and is refusing to listen to my pleas for her to take my concerns into account. How do I get her to see she’s asking for it?

There is a house near us that has bees. I literally would have never known if they didn't have a sign advertising “homemade” honey in their front yard.

Why not do your own research into any logistics required for bee keeping? I don't know a lot about it so perhaps you need to see if this is both attainable legally and also if there are other issues at play here?

I mean, I guess you don't have to sign on to bee keeping in your yard if you don't want to, but your objections would land a lot more solidly if they didn't sound like you have no idea what you're talking about. Kept bees do not swarm around the neighborhood. Maybe try doing a little research and understand what keeping bees actually means.

A lot of my neighbors have bees, chickens, rabbits, and probably some other stuff. You'd think I live in the sticks rather than an intown suburb, but I guess it's because we don't have an HOA. I'd take the bees over the chickens any day of the week.
