Dear Prudence,

I can’t tell if I should just shrug off or actually say something about what my friend “Sarah” is doing. In January, she went through a tough breakup with her fiancé, “James.” Breakups suck, and ending an engagement is a whole other level of hell. I understand that she’s going to be sad, angry, and hurt for a while.

But recently, she told me that she’s spent upwards of $500 on various Etsy witches to “curse” James. That’s a lot of money! I don’t believe in curses, but I feel like these people are taking advantage of her vulnerable state. Should I just laugh it off, or is this a real problem?

I wouldn't go into business with her or set her up with anyone I know that's for sure.

Does spending that $500 mean she can't cover her rent this month, or does it mean she has to cut back on her fancy lattes for a while? If it's in the first category I'd worry a little more, but either way you don't have a lot of standing to tell another adult not to waste her money on stupid shit.

I think my friend is an idiot for dropping $800 for a pair of world cup tickets to see two countries she doesn't even care about, but it's her $800.
