Name Change??

The county clerks office told me that it takes 6 weeks before we get our marriage license in the mail. So I got a certified copy for them for insurance purposes. Can I use the certified copy to change my name at the social security office or do they need the original?

Wow! That was quick. Yeah I thought it was taking forever too! On my certified copy it says it was processed August 12th and we were married August 8th! So I know we are officially legal. I just don't have the original! So frustrating!Hopefully it will be in the mail.

Mine took right at 6 weeks to come in. :-/  I'm not sure on the copy issue, I'm a slacker and haven't changed my name yet.

Are you kidding me? I need mine back ASAP for military paperwork. I hope they are okay with a certified copy because that's what I'll have to give the FI if that's the case.

On the website for SS, it only says that a "legal document" proving your marriage must be provided, so I would think a certified copy would count.   I went last Friday, it took about an hour.  I got my marriage license within a week of the wedding - yay, Fort Bend County!  :)  Does anyone know if they ask for the new SS Card at the DPS to change the license?  I was gonna wait for the new card, but maybe I should just go ahead and try with just the marriage license...

No, they do not ask for your SS card, just the license :)

If you go to www.namechangeexpress.com you can download the federal forms for free and they'll tell you what you need.

Thanks, Ladies!  I went this morning to DPS and you were right!  Only the marriage license, although they did ask me if I had gone to SS already, but didn't ask for any proof. Took less time than SS did, thank goodness!  :)
