Dress Alterations

I am looking for somewhere to get my dress hemmed, and possibly let out a little bit though the bodice. I have lace appliques that need to be moved up so I am super nervous about taking it somewhere to be altered. preferably looking for someone inside the loop, but will go outside for a good recommendation! Thanks

I just took my dress to Beautiful U last week. It's a real small kind of disheveled place, but the owner is very kind, and the seamstress did not flinch at the work I need done. My dress will be brought in 2-3 sizes, it is a fit and flare with tons of beading and detailed appliques. I go back next Tuesday for the 2nd fitting, I'll let you know how it turns out, but I am very confident in my choice to use them.

(It's in the Montrose/River Oaks area)

I've also heard from a couple of different brides that Nordstrom is great for alterations but have not used them myself.

@ Queen Jane: let me know how your fitting goes! were they very expensive? also, i'm a NOLA bride too!

@mirandaorr: can you get your dress altered there if you didn't buy the dress there (new to this whole alterations thing...)

i would be wary of beautiful U - i have heard horror stories of them messing up dresses.

i personally had a bad experience with them b/c i could only do saturday appointments (work full time with no lunch break) and they were sooo difficult to schedule with. at one point, they told me to just go somewhere else (yes, in the middle of alterations). they also said they would do some last minute things which they didn't (i didn't check when i picked it up b/c i was flying out to the wedding the next day - it wouldn't have mattered if i checked or not; btw, this last-minute schedule issue was b/c of all the trouble they gave me).  they are also very expensive for what you get (i only needed a hem, bustle, and bust-work - ahem, boob cups - which cost me $425 and took 6 weeks). The work was not as outstanding as i'd have hoped given the price i paid. they didn't even go over how to do the bustle with me, which caused problems on wedding day.

i would warn other brides to stay away and save yourself some stress and money.

Riceowls, I'll let you know for sure, next fitting is Tuesday.

I thought they were very pleasant. Weekdays during the day are the best times for me, so I suppose that worked to my advantage. I am having a shiit-ton of work done, the entire dress is being taken in at least 2 sizes, bustle and cups, and was quoted $350.

Not trying to be snarky, but I think I would make it a point to be able to put my dress on before leaving the shop, but I guess that's just me. Sorry you had such a headache with them.
