dress alterations

If your bought your dress at a chain (I.E. David's Bridal or Alfred Angelo) did you use their alterations service? Or did you go to an individual to have yours done?

I am going dress hunting this Friday and if we happen to find a dress, I want to be prepared with my options.

I didn't buy my dress from a chain, but from several brides on here, I've heard the recommendation NOT to go to David's Bridal for alterations even if your dress is from there. Sorry, I can't elaborate any further because I have no first hand experience...

My dress is being made by a seamstress so I can't really help on the big chain thing. I have heard horror stories of DB and AA alterations. I'd say find someone you feel you can trust to alter it and if that is the store's seamstress then that's who you should go with.

I had mine done (recently!) at Beautiful U after several referrals. When I got there it was a hole in the wall and the price quote sounded very steep, but people had sworn up and down by them. My dress (here's the link) is VERY detailed so I was concerned about having it worked on. I needed the bust taken in but it couldn't be taken in at the sides - it had to be done IN THE FRONT. I was SO nervous. I went for a fitting last week and it looked FLAWLESS. Absolutely worth every penny.

They also did my bustle (I needed 8 buttons) and added an elastic band (sort of like a bra strap) on the inside of my dress to hold it in place.

I haven't gotten my AA dress altered yet, but the quote I was given for just a bustle seemed kind of high.  I would def price different places

I'm getting my DB dress done at Beautiful U. We had a few hiccups, but they're work is amazing and I feel 100% comfortable with my dress.

i did not have a great experience at beautiful U, but i guess it just goes to show that you can't please everyone (i found them overpriced and ornery, and they did not do some of the things promised). i'm glad the other brides posting here had great experiences.

I heard to stay away from DB and AA.

I got my dress at the Nordstroms Bridal Suite. I had to have my gown taken in/shortned in two places(mermaid shape but since im so short it looked odd unless taken up from the waist plus length from bottom) plus bustle and an adjustment to shorten my straps and it was only $250. Most the alterations ladys dont know what they are talking about but if you make an appointment with Delmy she is amazing!!! They charge a small extra fee if the dress isn't from Nordstroms but it isn't big enough to make a difference.

No!!!  they know you need to get your altertion done to make it fab!!! they will over charge you!!!  IYou should never pay $125 for a bustle it should be no more $50 at the most and a hem should be no more $150.  Shop around.  Some bridal shops only do the simple things, It is always best to go to some one that will make sure your dress fits you like a glove and give you that one on one personal attention.  A alteration can make or break your dress.  Collettithreads.com
