Unity Candle - without MOB

Hi,
My Mom passed away 10 months ago and I am wondering what I should do in terms of the lighting of the unity candle. Do I still do it or no?
I have MANY aunts that are my Mom's sisters and I do have a stepmom however I feel as though having her go up there to light the candle would not be what I would want.
Has anyone ran into this situation or could offer up some advice?
Thanks!!

Re: Unity Candle - without MOB

  • No one can replace your mom, but consider the aunt who you are most closest to. I had a friend who lit a candle herself on behalf of her mother, and the minster acknowledged her mother during the service
  • The two side candles can be lit by one of your ushers before the ceremony even begins. You don't need to have a family member from each side light one in a symbolic fashion.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Hear's an idea hopefully it will help. What if you have a vase with some flowers in it- on the vase you could have something like "in loving memory" with your mother's name, and as the other members come up to light the candles, and as you and your groom/bride do as well, everyone adds some water to the vase for the flowers. It will symbalize keeping the flowers alive in the vase, thus also preserving her memory as well. As far as I know this is a completely original idea I just came up with on the spot, but it is all yours-- so feel free to expand and play around with the idea.
