City Owned Buildings??

I posted for advice on cutting costs on the budget board and someone suggested using a city owned building.  I think they are talking about community centers and whatnot, but how do I search for those?  I'm not sure how to find them, or if this is a good idea.  So far I had only looked at places that are all inclusive, but I'm willing to do my own decor and everything if it's cheaper.  FI and I are paying for everything ourselves, and we want it to be as nice as possible for what we can afford.  Has anyone done anything like this, or is it a waste of time and more imporatantly, money?

Thanks!

What I did was do a search on historic buildings. The heights fire station is a great venue.

The Humble Civic Center is inexpensive, as far as renting rooms. But you'd have to do everything yourself. That could be good though if it's what you want to do. And the have a beautiful room with a wall of windows. It's really nice.

I'm renting one of the community centers for my reception basically because of cost and proximity to the church where we're marrying.  You can go on the City of Houston web site or call 713-794-9947 to ask for informaton/rates to rent any of the community centers in the Houston area.  They generall seat around 200 guests, and the one I'm renting has a full commercial kitchen that any caterer would definitely appreciate.  If you are decorating, they don't allow anything attached to the walls nor floor, so the decor is generally limited to table decor or any type of stands/colums/etc.  So far, I'm satisfied with the space because it's fairly newly renovated and we really aren't going to do much in the way of decorating.  You can email me at sherry_banks@hotmail.com if you have any other questions.
