Newport- why are hotels so expensive?!?!

Hey girls!  I was wondering if you had an advice about reasobable hotel accomodations in the Newport area.  I am getting married at the Newport Hyatt in June 2011 but the rooms at the Hyatt are way too expensive for our guests.  Almost all of our guests are from out of town.  Also, based on our cultural traditions, my family is expected to pay for the hotel accomodations (and food) for all of our immediate family for 2 nights.  We have a huge family so this means 15 rooms for 2 nights- isnt that insane!?!?!  I really want everyone to stay in the Newport area since all of our events will be there but it is just so expensive when we are the ones fronting the bill for so many people!  Anyone have any suggestions?  Ideally it would be great to have a nice accomodation for $100 per night but is that even possible in Newport?  Thanks for your help!

I think when you plan a wedding in Newport, you should expect the costs to be much higher because it is a popular historic seaport destination for weddings and vacationers alike. Factoring the cost of paying for our guests in a hotel with a two night minimum was taken into serious considerations before we choose our venue. We just couldn't do it so we decided to save money and host our wedding on a Sunday holiday and we did manage to get heavy employee discounts from friends and family members who work for Hyatt and Marriot for less than $100, although we could only secure 4 rooms for Hyatt and two for Marriot and it was for only ONE night which was for the Sunday night. Most of our OOT guests will be staying at Howard Johnson Inn in Middletown for $122.40 , that's the lowest we found for a decent hotel that was close to our venue. I have a few people staying in our two spare guests room and a few relatives staying at my parents' home too.

You might want to consider renting a house or condo, not sure how cost effective that is and for how many people but you could also pay for half of their two night stay.

I would also ask if my relatives wouldn't mind paying for a hotel stay as this is a very costly expense for the bride and groom unless you have an unlimited budget.

check out the hampton inn and suites as well as the residence marriott in middletown. they are still very nice/clean but are more reasonable. we're offering downtown newport as well as middletown. guests that are coming only for the wedding and not any vaca time may not want to spend so much on a hotel they wont even see. good luck!

the best western mainstay was our cheapest room block and nearly everyone is staying there. our rates were 79 or 89 for weekdays and 143 for weekends in june. they also have a promotion on their website right now thats a little cheaper than this for a 3 night stay.
if youre expectd to pay for the rooms-have you considered getting suites? it might end up being cheaper if youre able to have people in their own bedroom instead of their own hotel room plus most suites have pullout couches. i know the best western has suites and the newport beach hotel and suites suites are newly renovated and beautiful.

I'm having a Saturday wedding in August and was unable to find a Middletown or Newport hotel for $100 or even close to it. I found this whole situation to be very upsetting. I ended up booking a block at a Hampton Inn which is farther away and am providing bus transportation for my guests to and from the wedding. From what I can tell most of my guests are opting for the hotel/bus situation over staying closer to the venue and paying the higher fees. I think that the rate at the Hampton Inn in Westport (the farther away choice) is around $120.

Since you are paying for all the rooms I think you should look into renting a house or two in Middletown or Newport. My immediate family is staying in a rental house In portsmouth. This is a good option for people staying more than 2 nights.

not sure if this will be of any help, but there is a hampton inn in the south county commons plaza on route 1 in south kingstown, and a holiday inn at the corner of rte. 1 and 138 just up the road from the hampton. if you're into the shuttle transportation idea, you might be able to get some lower priced rooms there and have your guests shuttled to newport.
