Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Is this cheesy or sweet?

I would like to incorporate a candlelight ceremony into our unity candle ceremony.  We will be having my FI's sister and our friend sing "Divine Romance" by Phil Wickham during our unity candle ceremony.  I know from experience that it can get awkward after the candle has been lit when there's about 3 minutes of song left and nothing to do but stare at the bride and groom who are awkwardly giggling because they're not sure what they're supposed to be doing.  As a solution, I thought it might be nice to include our guests by handing out candles before the ceremony, have the pastor explain the significance of the ceremony, and light their candles from ours after we light the unity candle (like the Christmas candlelight ceremony at church).  I'm not a sappy person, and I definitely don't enjoy cheesy things, but this ceremony nearly brings me to tears each Christmas because of the spiritual significance.  Would this be a nice and meaningful way to include all of our guests, or am I kidding myself and it's actually pretty corny?  Thanks for the input!

  • It is your wedding and if you like the idea and it is meaningful to you then you should do it! On a side note, I think it's nice =)
  • How big is your wedding?  If it's small, this could work, but for a wedding or more than about 50 people I think it would take way too long.

Will there be any small children or grownups who behave like small children?  I can envision one child setting another child or adult on fire.
  • Based on the 300 people at church, it actually only takes a few minutes for everyone to light their candles, so I don't think it will take that long for our 150 guests (especially with a 4 minute long song).  I don't foresee that being an issue.  Good call with the kids!  Fortunately, it will be an adults only wedding so we won't need to worry about that :)
  • I think it is very sweet and wished I had seen it before my wedding
so I could steal it :)

  • it's a great idea and i was considering it for my wedding also, but we're focusing on other things at the moment. its a nice way to include the guests and keep everyone occupied, and even make the time pass quicker as people know whats coming instead of sitting there twiddling their thumbs for several minutes lol. good luck!
  • I think it's a good idea, but I would shorten the song so you don't have that awkward nothing to do period of time.
