Decorating church altar - alternative to flowers

I'm getting married in a not-very-ornate church. So far, all my decorating ideas for the reception have not included flowers, and I'm wondering how far I can take that... I'm not anti-flower or anything :-) just trying to be different. I am thinking about doing gem-studded ribbons for the pews. Does anyone have any ideas that could be an alternative to flowers to decorate the altar? It's a morning reception so extra candles doesn't really seem like the right way to go either.

Thanks!!!

  • My fiance inherits the family bible when he gets marriend, so I planned on displaying the bible at the altar with one of the readings pages marked with a piece of ribbon.  I also have seen the unity candle personalized with colors and initials matching the overall theme, and that seems to make a nice focal point for people to look at.  As for around the altar, remember that you'll have attendents that will help your venue.  Give them a sparkly hairpiece or necklace that will be sure to spruce up the front.
