I, too, would skip them rather than try to be creative with them. They are only going to get thrown in the trash, no matter how "cool" they are, and it's pretty last minute to try and get creative.
I think you have enough on your plate with not knowing how many people from work will be coming. And I'm not saying that to be snarky. I just think the guest list thing is a bigger issue for you than the programs at this point. Don't create more work for yourself.

I agree nixing is definitely an option if they're not important to your ceremony.
However, another idea I've seen is a large chalkboard w/ a nice frame that has information written on it. It is normally set at the front of the ceremony area, and just lists the attendents, officiants, and readers, etc., instead individualized layouts of the service. Of course, you need someone who has really nice writing, so this might be a large request on short notice. Just google image "chalkboard program" and you'll see what I mean.
