Best Caterer for hors d'oeuvres reception

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a caterer for a cocktail reception with heavy hors d'oeuvres?? We are thinking a few stations and passed options as well. The more budget friendly the better!
I have been looking around and I have 2 concerns with many places I've seen.
First, meeting dietary restrictions: We have a fair amount of vegetarian friends/family so I definitely want there to be some options for them. Also, I am dairy-intolerant so I would definitely want to make sure there are a few things for me to munch on as well! (Not that the whole menu has to accomodate both those things)
Secondly, type/style of food: We are going for a slightly more casual party atmosphere, so I've seen a lot of foods that just seem too stuffy or fancy if that makes sense? We want some more non-intimidating food for our guests, things that don't need to really be explained out or have too many exotic ingredients.

Thanks much!

  • You can take a look at Russell Morin's.  They have A LOT of option to pick from.  We had four pages of passed hors d'oeuvres to review and I have a feeling that wasn't even half of what they offer.  For dinner we are actually doing three different stations.  They do everything from super fancy to burgers to sushi.  I know they definitely try to work with the couples budget.  I didn't think they were too expensive, but I know some have commented that they feel they are.  I do know they have vegetarian options and will work with other dietary restrictions/allergies.
  • We are using Blackstone. They have tons of options for hors d'oeuves that are less stuffy. They have some "out of the box" suggestions that include things like mini sliders, tomato soup and mini grilled cheeses, mini hot dogs and lobster rolls-- etc.

  • This might be different with hors d'oeuvres only receptions, but Russell Morin gave us several different hors d'oeuvres menus to choose from for our cocktail hour.  They were all pretty similar in price (a couple $ difference per person) but all had a very different feel.  They had something like Blackstone's mentioned above (I believe it's called the American).  You can mix & match between menus, too.

  • We did all hors d'oeuvres at our wedding and I loved my caterer.  It's Steve McKendall and he owns Blue Moon Catering which mostly runs out of the Warwick FOP.  I had a little over a 100 people with 600 (I think) passed hors d'oeuvres (scallops and bacon, spanikopita, pigs in a blanket - for my little cousins - chicken satay, stuffed mushrooms), an antipasto station, a pasta station and a dessert buffet.  After tax and gratuity, but not including a bartending fees, it was ~$32 a person.  The pasta station was freakin' awesome!  I had no idea it was going to be like it was.  It was him and someone else and you could pick your toppings (like chicken, shrimp, mushrooms, etc.) and sauce and they actually cooked it right there.  It looked so cool with them flipping the pasta around and the blue flames from whatever they were using as a heating element.  I was told the antipasto station was huge (I only saw it at the end when it was all eaten up) and the HD were great.  The dessert buffet was cute too.  One of the things he had was bite sized cake pieces and he decorated each one with little flowers to match my wedding colors.
He is easiest to get in touch with by phone.  401-527-6750
