Cake vs Cupcake

Ok, so i am thinking about doing a traditional cake, maybe on the smaller side but, instead of serving it I was thinking of doing cupcakes. Basically using the cake for the whole "cut the cake" but serving cupcakes instead. Is this a total waste and will my guest wonder where is the cake???

    I don't think that's a bad idea. Cupcakes are relatively inexpensive when ordered in bulk. In my culture we do a Bride and Groom cake and than we serve the guest mini cakes or in this case cupcakes. Sometimes a cake buffet is served, several cakes are put on stands of varying heights. It's a feast for the eyes and is really cost effective. My cousin's wedding had a dessert buffet instead of one big 2-3 tier cake. It literally saved them hundreds of dollars. Presentation is key!

    I am doing cupcakes with a 6 inch round cake at the top !!!! My whole cake with cupcakes and holder cost $600 and thats going to feed a wedding of 250 to 275!!!! I love the idea!! cause whats left can be taken home way easier!!!

    I think it all depends on yoru bakery... mu cupcakes & cutting cake cost just as much as a typical cake because of the flavors and decorations I chose.  Our guests liked being able to go up and choose their cupcake flavor, and have more than one, too!  We made a sign indicating which color frosting went with which flavor cupcake...

    And we cut the 8" round.  Worked out perfectly for us!
