Hockey Themed?

My fiance and I were talking about doing a Hockey Themed wedding. We both love hockey, especially the Detroit Red Wings!

Any ideas or suggestions on this theme? Anything would be helpful!

  • I am a big believer that your wedding theme should be "wedding," and that other themes can quickly cross a fine line into children's party territory.

That said, I think if you keep the touches subtle you can work in your love of hockey. You could name the tables after hockey teams/terms, serve a hockey-themed dessert (perhaps hockey puck cookies or a hockey related groom's cake?), and there's an adorable idea for hockey escort cards here (http://www.elizabethannedesigns.com/blog/2010/06/09/hockey-inspired-wedding-ideas/).

  • My fiance and I are also into hockey (I'm a FLAMES girl, he's an OILERS guy), and he came up with a cute idea. Instead of listening to stupid "clinking" all night; we're going to have a 50/50 draw. So people can "buy" tickets, DJ will annouce, and depending on how much ticket was bought for, the better the kiss ;)
At the end of the night, we'll make a draw; half for winner half for flower girl and ring bear (they're brother and sister).

What does this have to do with hockey?

OP - is there a song that your team plays whenever they score a goal?  You could walk into your reception to that.  His and her hockey sticks incorporated into the centerpieces.  Grooms cake with the team logo on it (I made FI a San Jose Shark's cake for his birthday one year and he still talks about how much he appreciated it.)

<div>Me too.  I think a hockey themed wedding starts to look like a hockey game pretty quick, and imo, a hockey game should be a lot cheaper than that.</div><div>
</div><div>Let the wedding be a wedding and if you REALLY want to include hockey, you could have your FI wear cuff links for his team or do the groom's cake as a logo of his team.  That's what my FI will probably want for his groom's cake.</div><div>

  • I know that there are people who have been married in the NHL hall of fame. If you have ever been there is it beautiful!! Or you make your tables different NHL teams, something like that. And on Ebay I saw a hockey cake topper.

[QUOTE]I'm a big Red Wings fan, but I agree with starburst that your wedding should be a wedding; however, if you really want to do it... You could use names of famous Red Wings instead of table numbers.  Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, Sid Abel, Ted Lindsay, Alex Delvecchio, Nick Lidstrom, Chris Chelios, Slava Kozlov, Slava Fetisov, Sergei Fedorov (I know, I know, but he's my favorite), Darren McCarty, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Osgood, Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Holmstrom, Pavel Datsyuk, Igor Larionov... Or, depending on the number of tables you have, you could number your tables according to the years in which they won the Stanley Cup.  This would only work with 11 or fewer tables. This would probably cost a fortune, but you could have a bar top with an ice surface in it, like at the Hockeytown Cafe.

I think this would be a great idea. You don't want too much hockey otherwise it will easily begin to look like a child's party and not something as important as a wedding. You could also get a garter that supports the Wings, maybe a hockey puck/stick charm to put on your toss bouquet, etc. Make sure that the ideas are subtle and nothing over the top.

  • As a Sabres fan.... i've thought this one over. Unfortunately, we're going for a very formal feel -- so the hockey theme is out for us.

If you're going formal - stick to colors with an 'ice' theme. they have sabres garters...i'm sure they've gotta have red wing ones.
Less formal - hockey pucks as escort cards, goal song to walk in to, hockey term table names, tickets as ceremony programs or invitations, etc

i've seen personalized jerseys....but i'd keep those for the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. =)

i'm sure 'hockey theme wedding' or 'detroit red wings theme party' would give you lots of ideas on google images.

....are you by any chance getting married on a game night?  I'm not, but if I was, i'd head down to the arena just to get a pic like this!!!!

  • Those are all excellent ideas!!

I want to keep it classy, but also incorporate some hockey.
I LOVED the idea about his and her hockey sticks, and the use of pucks as escort cards!!
If we do end up getting married on a game day, we will definitely have to go down to the Joe and take photos! :)

    Awesome ideas though, absolutely awesome!

  • We're doing a few things to incorporate the Red Wings...  Our colours are White, Navy & tiffany blue.  We're getting married in the winter (Dec. 29th, 2012) and we'll be doing a winter/red wings themed wedding...  Everything that will be the Red Wings will be in our colours (not red):
    - Seating chart (Joe Louis arena) - each section = a table
    - Table names - Mini jerseys of  our favorite players
    - Favors - white rally towels of our initials & wedding date
    - Possible groom's cake of the Red Wings (red velvet too)
    - Our little "flower boy" will be tossing little skinny foam pucks & will be pulling our ring bearer (a little guy) on a little Red Wings buggy...

The rest will be winter-like... I'm hoping it fits well together... it looks great in my mind!!!
  • My fiance and I are HUGE Red Wings fans and that is the theme we are going with too!  I love the idea of the Rally towel with your names and the date on it!
