DJ Deposit

Hi everyone -

I have a question - I want to know if this is common practice.  I sent a deposit to our DJ (well respected in the area, great reviews on this site) in August.  The check was cashed 8/23.  We haven't recevied a signed contract.  We emailed him two weeks after he cashed the check and he didn't reply.  We emailed again simply saying call us a couple days later, and he did call, and said he was busy, and didn't think it was a bug deal that we didn't have a contract.  The deposit was $500 (the total bill is going to be about $2300).  This is a lot of money to not have a contract.

Am I overreacting?  Does this happen often?

I don't technically have a signed contract with my DJ, my online account with him was opened once he received the deposit though.

August, September and October are the busiest time of year for vendors.  I don't think the DJ is trying to scam you, I just think he's playing gigs and working hard for the current brides that are getting married now.  Sounds like the admin side of the business is on the backburner.  Very normal for anyone with a job.....when some things get busy at work, other things go by the wayside.

I don't think its necissarily a bad thing but I agree with you its a lot of money.  Give him until the end of Sept and then press him for a contract.  For your own sanity.

If you want a contract, push for it. My dj was half that amount and got me a contract right away.  Having said that, if this dj has a good reputation, you're probably ok.  bad news travels fast thanks to the internet.
