Photography Studios or one with mulitple photographers??

Hi!

I'm hoping some of you can help. I know a lot of you recommend single individuals for your photographers, or have experience with them but I'm looking for a larger studio with maybe a group working together.

One primarily reason is my cousin had a contract which was drafter (husband is a lawyer) and had a clause in the event of illness or accident. Well the photographer didn't show up and while they were refunded the money they received NEXT TO NO notice to find a replacement. I really don't want this to happen to us so we're looking for a studio, where if one is sick at least they could send another.

Any suggestions?? I greatly appreciate it!

We are using Symbol Photography out of Boston. They will travel to Rhode Island. There are two photographers and guarantee a replacement if they are sick.

I can see your concern but in the unlikely situation that this should happen to you, a reputable photographer will have backup even on short notice. Finding a photography duo is also another option since you will always have TWO professional photographers. This is better than having one pro and a assistant or some junior photographer substitute. My experience with the big studio was a lot less personal which bothered me because my visual memories are so important. I needed to click  (no pun intended) with the photographer. With the big studio,  I felt only the principle photographer's work was really impressive and the other photographers in the studio was just good but paled in comparison to the main photog. My photographers gave me a short list of who their replacements would be should either one of them not be present so I knew that the style and look I wanted would not be compromised.

    Photography Duos (two pro photographers)

    - Visual-Obsession
    - Avenna Studio
    - Zenobia Studio
    - The Feds studio

    Studio (3 photographers and more)

    - Carla Ten Eyck
    - DMPJ by Glen Cooper
    - Oggi Studio

Most single-person photographers have a clause in their contract that they'll send a replacement in the case of emergency.  You can look at the replacement's work if it's a big deal to you.  Most photographers (especially in small RI) know each other and work together.  I can totally see how the situation would be worrisome, but I don't think you should specifically look for a studio for this reason.  Like PP said, studios are usually staffed by several sub-par photographers who haven't been able to break out on their own yet.

Agree with PPs. We asked this question of every photographer we met and they all have contingency plans in place to provide a comparable replacement in the event of unforseen emergency.

My friend just recently got married and she used A Bride's Day in Cumberland. They had a lovely studio, several photographers, and lility insurance. I just booked with them the other day and was really impressed. http://www.abridesday.com
