Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

suggestions on back drop

we are getting married in May in NY.  The ceremony will be outside on a patio with a great veiw.  There is no arch or anthing lik that for us to stand by. I am thinking of buying potted trees (like from a nursery or home depot) that are 5 ft tall or so and putting them each in a nice container that matches our theme. So my question is, when you buy trees that "young" will they flower or do they flower that young? I mean what are my chances of getting trees with purple flowers? if so which would you reccomend?  I also like this idea because its not so much of a waste as we can plant them at our new home. I hope this makes sense, I obviously know nothing about trees or plants.

Re: suggestions on back drop

  • I would ask a local nursery by your home.
  • Lilacs would last but it could be a tad early.
  • Based on how far north NY is, a lot of trees should be in bloom around May. Check this with local greenhouses, though. Often trees in greenhouses have either perpetual or mixed up bloom cycles.

Other good trees to look for would be:
    Redbuds
    Crab Apple (has potent-but good-smell)
    Cistena Plum
    Wine and Roses Weigela
    Crapemyrtle
Pawpaw (these generally have fewer flowers, but still pretty purple)
Magnolia (especially O'Neill variety, but others as well)
    Empress Tree
Rose of Sharon (tends to be more shrublike, but can be classified as tree)
  • o thank you
