How many cake servings?

So, we're estimating 140 for the reception. I've decided to have cupcakes as a surprise groom's cake in 3 flavors. I'm just trying to figure out how many servings to order... should I have 140 servings of the wedding cake, and 140 cupcakes? That seems like overkill to me. What about 125 servings of wedding cake, and 90 cupcakes? More reasonable? Is it still overkill? HELP! TIA!

Typical recommendations are to have less cake than guests, and I know a lot of people have leftovers. But I think it all depends on your crowd. Our cakes were set to serve 170 each (we wanted each guest to be able to have a piece from each) and only 135 people came, yet we had no leftovers. The cakes were so good people went back for seconds (and some possibly thirds).  It's totally a guessing game.
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

Like said above, it's a total guessing game.  Some weddings have extra cake than people and have no leftovers, others have less cake than people and do have leftovers.  We had 200 servings about and had a ton left over with about 150 people showing up.

we have the wedding cake feeding everyone (75 people) and the grooms cake feeding a third (25). In the end the guest cound came out to 60ish so we will have a surplus of cake.
