Cocktail Hour Question

We are having 4 passed bite-size hors d'oeuvres and a passed signature cocktail during our cocktail hour which will be partially outside & inside the foyer area (not in the reception ballroom). I am still debating on not renting extra cocktail tables for this - do you think this is a bad idea? If I do gettables how many do you think? 4-5? (120-150 ppl) I def don't want to get any chairs - there are a few loungey chairs inside for those older guests and nemches they can sit on....but if I don't get tables then I also don't know how to display or tell the guests what is being served. Do I even need to do that since the servers will tell them what it is?TIA!

I don't think tables are neccessary for the cocktail hour.  Plus if the server is giving details I don't think you need to display information.  Most people would probably just ask the server anyway.Like you mentioned though I would make sure there are a few random places for older people to get off their feet.

I don't think you need tables or any sort of display to let everybody know what is being served during the cocktail hour. The server will usually tell the guests or guests will simply ask. For one hour, having the tables isn't worth it.  Skip it and relieve yourself of the added stress and cost!

For our cocktail hour we had 8 table, 4 high top bar tables and then 4 36" round tables. We had 3 passed hors d'oeuvres and a cheese and fruit display. We also had about 140 guests. I would honestly say that 8 tables was a bit too many, but I would definitely suggest a couple. Even if it's the bar high tops, so that people can rest their drinks on while they're eating the little snacks. Most people can stand and do both, but some aren't as coordinated. ;-) Just a suggestion. But I wouldn't worry about telling them what's being passed. The servers are telling and that's totally fine enough.
