Makeup

Hey! I hope everyone had an amazing weekend. I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but I'm kind of at a loss. I think I grossly underestimated the cost of make-up based on the places I started looking into... Here are my questions: 1. Where did y'all get your make-up done or where are you planning on getting your make up done? 2. How much should I expect to pay? 3. Is a trial necessary? I'm planning from Upstate NY, and I'm not sure when I'll be able to come down and do a trial. 4. If a trial is necessary, how far out should I do the trial? The week before the wedding? Spring break? Winter break?

    1. I am using a family friend that is a makeup artist, so I can't recommend her as she only does weddings for friends/family. But, I have seen Katie Astoria with Modern Muse recommended lots and Tracy Maskill (the spelling on these might be a little off, I am just going off memory because I've seen them mentioned so many times on here). 2. Before my family friend offered, I looked in to a few and found the price to be around $80-130. The trial rates I found were about $50. 3. I would say a trial is definitely necessary. You want to make sure your makeup artist is a good fit with the way she applies makeup, that the makeup she is using won't cause irritation on your skin and that it will last the entire duration of your wedding and reception. Etc, etc. 4. I am doing my trial 2 months beforehand... This is just a time that works conveniently for us. I would say that a week beforehand might not be a good idea though in case you didn't end up liking your MUA you would need time to find a replacement.

I'm using Katie Astoria with Modern Muse Makeup Artistry since I've heard such great things about her from others on the board. A median price I came to find when I looked at a bunch of artists in the area was about $65-$75/bridesmaid for day of, bride day of about $100-$125, trial and photo sessions about $65-$75 with an extra $10-$15 if you want lash application also. I am not doing a trial, but I am using her for engagements, bridals, and an after session as well as the day of - so my bridals will kind of be the 'trial'. I think with an experienced artist you wont need a trial as long as you allow plenty of time for your makeup the day of - that way if you don't like something they can change it till you are happy with how you look.

I don't wear make-up daily, so I couldn't imagine spending that much for a make-up artist. I also really don't like the feel or smell of make-up (strange I know). So, I used former knottie/current nestie TexanSarah. Her rates are verrrrry reasonable.I've also heard of people using Lucie Marie and Make-up by Adrienne in addition to the others that have been mentioned here. I think you'd be fine doing your trial the week before the wedding so long as you are confident in the artist you choose. I had mine the sunday before my saturday wedding.

    1. Katie with Modern Muse Makeup came to my venue in Kyle.2. $100-125/bride, $60ish/bridesmaid/mom/other3. With Katie, you're in good hands, and a trial is pretty optional. She did a fantastic job and while I did have a trial, I didn't change anything about what she did during the test run.4. If you do a trial, I'd say anytime is ok as long as you're ~2 weeks out from the wedding. You'll want to have time to change things if you don't like it.

Okay now you all have me thinking I'm paranoid or something, lol. I am so amazed so many of y'all don't insist on a trial.  It's 100% necessary for me, but then again I have difficult skin and care a lot about makeup. I know I just wouldn't be happy if something came out looking funky on the day of, it wore off, etc and I want to be completely confident in my appearance.
