unusual venues?

anyone know of any venues that are not typically used for wedding receptions? i've found a few galleries and such, but am just trying to see what else is out there. it will be a december wedding and we'd love an indoor space with some sort of patio or outdoor space. we've moved our wedding back 7 months after deciding against a wedding out of town so i'm kind of starting from scratch again! thank you!

A photographer friend of mine shot a wedding at Spiderhouse a while back, and I though that was neat. I considered having my reception in a bowling alley at one point... Maybe Scholz Garten? Pioneer Farms? Ummmm... I don't know! Most places I know of where you can have a big party are used for wedding receptions all the time!

I've heard that you can rent out the patio of Hill's Cafe. Habana also rents their entire downstairs. When we went for our RD they said that they had a wedding in the courtyard and reception inside. I think someone on here rented out an observatory for her wedding.

I know of someone that is having their reception in the Bob Bullock museum. I have never heard of that before.

I was considering doing mine at Flatbed Press... I used to go there when I was in art school and remembered loving the space. Mark, the owner is really friendly and said he would be happy to do something like that. The only thing I didn't remember is that there really is no large, central space for guests to gather, so there would be no place for dancing etc and for everyone to be together in one room. Not sure if that would be an issue for you but hope that helps!

a somewhat unusual venue that i'm considering is the scottish rite theater, which usually operates as a children's theater. there's no outdoor space or anything, but it's really beautiful inside, and the events manager there is very helpful (her name is rita kelso). they let you choose your own vendors, but you have to bring pretty much everything in (they don't have tables or chairs or anything). it's a historical building, and it has a lobby full of pictures of famous texans (which is a quirky advantage, in my estimation)! happy hunting!
